I'm busy having an argument on gchat with my brother right now.

He says that speed does not necessarily equate to irresponsibility, and I disagree with him.

I'd like to ask you guys who speed:

What reason is there to speed on public roads?

That would be correct. Speeding may equate to irresponsibility.

Those posters: "Speed Kills" have always pissed me off. Doing 120 km/h is fine as long as its not in a 60 km/h zone. You will be doing the same speed, but relevant to the speed zone you would either be speeding or not.

Well yes. Doing 60km/h in a 120km/h zone is also pretty dangerous. My question is: there are context-appropriate speed limits on our roads - what reasons does one have to exceed these limits?

Speeding is fun (when it's safe to do so), but not on urban roads.

Anything over 160 without a valid reason is irresponsible.

Fun & impatience.

Time, haste, ect, ect.

Most "context" appropriate speed limits is Bullschit to begin with. Discretion is the real moto here. Never drive much faster than the surrounding traffic and at the same token never drive much slower. But if there is an open and clear road then all hell is loose.

Never argue with the better person :D

Go so fast so that the thrill of speed overwhelms your fear of crashing.

I get tired if im doing 120 constantly. So i vary from 120-140

It depends on the situation - empty road - why not, you're only playing with your life.

There's speeding and speeding...

Speed is relevant in context. Speeding through a residential area is irresponsible. However doing an extra 10 or 20 km an hour on the M1 (90/100 in an 80km/h zone) in a modern car is hardly so... especially as there are no pedestrians (supposedly). Likewise I tend to travel at over the 120km/h limit on a freeway (usually around 135 km/h). That's not really the same as dicing a supercar down William Nicol ;)

That said, I claim no ethical high ground, and I usually pay my fines if I'm caught...

Those are claims - according the the lambo driver, they weren't 'dicing' - and if you look at the pics, the guy didn't roll far, so he couldn't of being going fast.

Speed does not kill.... its the chop behind the wheel that Kills.... hehehe

If you look at the Autobahn, it has the best record for safety... It allows for capable vehicles to travel at higher speeds. My question is as follows; why is an 18 wheeler truck permitted to travel 120 where it takes it half of the durban route to stop and me in my car capable of stopping 10 x faster. Its quite simple...speed variation on two vehicles... Do yourself a favour, drive to Nelpspruit at white river with those awesome bending and flowing roads... take a decent car (AKA GTI or equivilant) and gas it through those bends.... car handles it easily.. now come around a corner at 120km/h where the tyres are holding onto the edge and come around the blind corner to see the cement truck putting along at 20 cos its overloaded.... THATS WHAT CAUSES THE SH1TE! Speed variation.....

And the speed limit was 80km/h. If you'd been going 40km/h slower than you were (AKA at the speed limit) you would have had sufficient time and space to react safely.

I can understand than many speedsters feel they're good drivers and are well within their abilities during fast driving, but the fact remains that the faster you're going, the less time you have to react, the bigger the distances required to come to a stop, and the closer to your car's limits you're driving. You might be able to drive relatively safely at high speed, but it would be even safer for yourself and other road users to drive at the speed limit.

Speeding (used in the context of, going as fast as possible without regard to public safety and or laws) is irresponsible. Nobody is in full control at excess speeds. They're lying to themselves if they think they are.

Anything of a 100 things you're not in control of can (and will) happen and if you were speeding chances are you wouldn't be able to stop the accident and kill innocent people (or yourself, lambo/custom spider racing anyone?)

Sure, you might think you're being responsible and checking all your mirrors while you speed and wade through traffic like the ******* you probably are, but what if your tire blows out? What if one piston goes or the computer on your luxury car fails to tell the left rear wheel to correct itself and you skid off into oncoming traffic/kids/other cars

You'll flip your car, put others in danger... man, I can name a few hundred things that can go wrong.

So is speeding irresponsible. Yes. Why? Because most accidents that do happen can be minor if you stuck to the speed limit.

I absolutely hate people who tries to justify speeding in residential/school zones as well.

If everyone drove responsibly then there would still be accidents, but fewer deaths, fewer crippled people. Fewer coma's and fewer ruined families.

I like you

Would you agree that a driver is more vigilant when they driving faster?
More adrenaline, faster reaction speeds?

Not necessarily true. If you've ever been in a Ferrari you will be frightened by how quickly the car comes to a stop from high speeds, this is mostly thanks to the large mags and huge breakpads. Performance vehicles are made to stop much quicker than you bottom of the range cars.

Dude, a Ferrari going 200km/h will take longer than a Jazz going 80km/h to get to 0km/h. Yes, performance cars generally have terrific brakes, but that doesn't completely mitigate the speed differentials when looking at stopping distances.

*edit* Right back at ya, AcidRazor :p
