Sport SUV Struggle

How much mileage do you do a year on average?....if lots then fuel efficiency makes a rather large difference to running costs....if very little then depreciation is the main cost....or maintenance.
I have the SQ5 2014 and the suspension really isn't meant for off road. Its setup more like a sports car.
I do 25Kkms a year so a diesel makes a big difference in the running costs once in a larger car.
Its only SUV features really are a biggish boot and a higher than sedan ride height....otherwise you might as well be in a GTI. (which would be slower)
 
Thanks for you replies thus far. What are the off-road capabilities like of these other fancy SUVs? Similar to the SQ5 probably? Or a lot more capable?

Not much these days, probably 10,000km. Was 25,000 before Covid.

Won't be looking at a hot hatch or sedan. Already have fast sedans.

None of the ones you listed in your OP have any off-road capabilities, unless you mean kerb crawling

If you want to do anything other than drive a super-smooth gravel road, then RR/S, or the Cayenne

Hehe... To clarify, I mean capable at driving well off the beaten track, dirt roads, farm roads, bad condition roads, etc. I wouldn't be doing any extreme 'true off-roading'. Which I'm quite sure the Touareg and Q7 are mostly capable of...? Everyone tells me the Touareg in particular is heavily underrated.

Well then fuel efficiency isn't so bad and depreciation becomes the big issue.
If that's the case then the older the car and lower initial cost (when you buy it) will reduce the depreciation the most.
Also you need to decide medium SUV or large SUV but at that mileage the larger heavier ones won't really crucify you as much as it would me.
So the oldest one with acceptable features, reliability and performance....

Touareg/Q7/Cayenne are based on the same platform, and pretty much the same engines, air suspension, etc.

Yep, they can handle rough roads, just make sure you buy one with air suspension.

Looking at the mileage that you will do, rather get a petrol one: it seems you like speed/performance, and I think you will be disappointed with the oil burners.

But seriously, test drive a Range Rover/Sport Supercharged and compare to the others.

Now do you see why the SQ5 BiTDI sticks out? :D 5-sec SUV, but just doesn't have the same sort of 'off-road' capabilities (in the sense that applies to me). And very dated interior for a R500k car. But that's not terribly important. Happy with analogue dials and lots of buttons...

All the others are TDIs.

Leaves the new SQ5 3.0T. Which other gasoline options? SS? I must test drive. Like the looks, sound, but worry about the cost of parts.

Comfortable in VAG land...

Cayenne diesel S - 850Nm and 280kw. It's most certainly not disappointing, and it also delivers amazing economy for its size and power.

Haven't looked at Porsche but it feels a little too flashy for me. Not that I care much about what other people think!

Also the last Porsche SUV I was in felt terribly cheap and plasticky.

Drove it too (floored it), a Cayenne but not sure if S or not. Probably not. Didn't feel too inspiring at all. So I would need to look at an S only.

How does the sound system compare to B&O, Bose, Dynaudio, etc.? I need to find out Cayenne add-ons and other nice-to-haves to look out for.

If you want a “sports” SUV, forget about off-road ability.

Land Rover / Range Rover comes close to having any off-road ability, but I’d avoid anything diesel.
