Ya look, the wife's Q5 has 20" wheels. It's been on dirt roads, even [very, very shallow] mud with zero issues (2x4 'tuna had to engage diff lock as it wasn't budging without AWD/ 4x4). Quattro FTW, but let's not kid each other. If you want off road capabilities, look elsewhere. You will not find it here.

I think the Q7 / Touaregs have a low range, so there you may have a slightly more capable vehicle, but it's not, I think, class leading in its abilities?

I have had my 2014 Touareg 3.0 V6 TDi R-Line for two and a half years now and I love it! It is no where near as 'sporty' as my 2015 Golf R but a lot more practical for myself, wife, son and two dogs. I went for the R-Line as I don't do much offroad, other than the occasional dirt road and have access to my FIL's Fortuner 2.8 GD-6 4x4 and a company Ranger 4x4 if I really want to go off road. The early generation Touareg's including the T3 like mine are surprisingly capable off road, even without the optional air ride, low range and diff locks if you can even find one fitted with all of it. If you want 'sporty' with some offroad capability I would look at the Touareg, Q7 or Cayenne with the bigger 4.2 V8 TDi or petrol engines especially in the Cayenne range.

90% of Touareg's and Q7's never had low range or diff lock, I managed to find one T3 Touareg when I was looking with the Terrain Tech package that did but it was too 'used' for my liking. The Q5 is based on the same platform as the A4 which when fitted with 'Quattro' uses the mechanical Torsen 4wd which has proved brilliant over the years. Touareg's use the same 4wd system although it is called 4Motion and very different to the Haldex based 4wd on smaller platforms like Tiguan's and Golf's.

Yeah pretty hard find one specced with that, imagine trying to find one with all terrain package, air suspension and radar cruise, I wonder if one exist lol
 
OOOH this is going to end well.
So the first criteria is FAST. This only means the OP will be driving the sheet out of the car,
Then throw into the mix he is looking at "fast" cars that is almost 10 years old, and probably had the sheet driven out of them already, with no warrantee left.
And people are confused why bank managers can be difficult.

Thanks for the good read. It’s a lovely car, but silly money. Not a good financial decision when I can get something that ticks the boxes for half or even a quarter of the price. So that’s BMW off the list, I’m afraid.

I think the reasons I ended with Audi SQ5/Q7 and VW Touareg are sound. For the latter ones I need to consider 3.0 TDI V6 or 4.2 TDI V8.

I already have a V8, so it’s not like I have a strong itch to get another one. I need to look more into what software and basic mods can do for the V6, I reckon. A 5 - 6 second 0-100 would work for me.

Am also looking at the Porsche Cayenne S as suggested here.

Anything else?

Something else playing in the back of my mind is diesel. Wonder if we’ll be seeing a shift away from it here in SA any time soon, like in other parts of the world?

It's easier to control with longer gearing actually.

But now I think about it, I had low range and rear diff lock in the cayenne gts anyway.

Sorry but you are confusing me here, are you looking for a sports Suv or vanilla Suv? You keep mentioning the 3.0tdi which is a vanilla engine, the only fun one will be the SQ5, it will suck in the Touareg.

The 4.2tdi V8 would make more sense but even then it will be super heavy so i dont know how "sporty" that is. Maybe a muscle SUV but i dont think sport.

The only Suvs i would consider sporty are:
BMW X3m40i
Audi SQ5
Porsche macan
BMW X5 M50i/M50D
Mercedes benz GLC 43 " Fake amg"

Now these at least have the suspension to match the engines. The ones you keep mentioning are going to be floaty because well they are just normal Suvs that can go fast.

So please clarify for me what you actually want, a sport suv or just any Suv.

Guy in the touareg group told me, there is nothing like lowering your v8 tdi to the lowest setting and making a gti owner cry next to to the robot
 
Toureg V8 this. Also the recent shape in white with black detailing looks amazing
