Am currently a sub, even though I am a student and could get Google's or Apples one cheaper because I prefer the recommendation algorithm, iTunes sucks and there is a noticeable quality degradation.

If you're using Google Play Music, https://www.googleplaymusicdesktopplayer.com/ is a desktop app for it.

Spotify's Android app leaves a lot to be desired, like basic gesture support, but it's actually pretty fine to use generally. Now if they could have a PowerAmp partnership...

The mobile music apps are fairly meaningless to me as I almost exclusively listen to music with headphones at my PC with a proper DAC and amplifier. The Spotify app has the advantage of functioning as a remote for when I'm playing through my PC speakers or PS4 Pro.

I tried the GPM desktop app and really don't like it. Would much rather just use the web app.

I wasn't saying that you can't EQ Spotify - it's just annoying that one isn't built into the desktop app at the very least.
 
So I saw this article yesterday and I installed Spotify... Oh wow, where have I been. It's awesome and that I can try their premium option for free for a month is a jam@

Why not pay R5.99 for three months, which this thread is about, rather than take a single month for free?

Nonsense. Millions and millions of users aren't all delusional. Spotify's weaknesses are plain to see yet people are still mad about them in very large numbers. It's a juggling act of quality human-curated playlists, machine learning recommendations that s**t on the competition, integrating some popular music that best conforms to your listening history, experimenting with popular stuff outside your comfort zone to a limited degree, and the obvious inclusions of popular and/or new stuff from related artists and stuff that people with similar tastes enjoy.

If it was easy to understand how Spotify does it, then Play Music and Apple Music would do it. I can't imagine life without Spotify. I have it playing for countless hours every day - any other music service would rapidly run out of appropriate music to play. I know because I've used Simfy, Deezer, Apple Music and Play Music, and they don't come close.

Their family plan doesn't function the same as those for Play Music and Apple Music. Spotify does monitor IP addresses and location data, and requires that family members access from the same location. In the US and other countries with family subscriptions, students away at college have to take out their own student memberships to have Spotify, as an example.

They are supposed to reside at the same address however it does not appear that Spotify is actively monitoring location data or require that all access happens from the same address. In fact the latter requirement would be completely bizarre considering the service can be accessed from mobile devices and it would unreasonable to expect an entire family all always be at the same location.

Unless something has changed in recent months, Spotify does monitor location data and it does cause issues. You obviously don't have to exclusively connect from the same connection or location, but the periodic 'check-in' is a real PITA to US customers last I saw a Reddit thread ranting about it. Which wasn't that long ago.

The restriction affects mostly friends trying to share a family account and students moving to dorms, but it's pretty crappy to also punish non-nuclear families that may be spread out a bit.
