The Springbok selectors have named the national squad for the Vodacom Tri-Nations away matches against New Zealand and Australia.

South Africa will be involved in back-to-back Test matches against New Zealand on 5 July in Wellington and 12 July in Dunedin. The team completes its overseas commitments of the tournament on 19 July against the Wallabies in Perth.

Five players will undertake their first Vodacom Tri-Nations tour to Australasia; Odwa Ndungane, Andries Bekker, Ryan Kankowski ,Tendai Mtawarira, Brian Mujati and Luke Watson.

The touring squad comprises of 13 backs and 15 forwards. The bulk of the touring party departs on Thursday from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and they will be followed by a smaller contingent of mainly team management members the following day.

Captain John Smit will complete his club commitments in France over the weekend and he will join his team mates early next week in Wellington.

bru, like I said before, I am not a fan of sifting through threads that are pages long covering multiple topics relating to the Boks, certainly not an entire season in one thread.
If folks want to comment here, fine, if not, thats cool too, no offense.

I'm with you Sneeky... I do not see why every Springbok topic needs to be restricted to one thread!

If that is the case then every obscure, meaningless off topic thread relating to snot noses, farts, music should also be limited to one thread! And every time a router is mentioned it should be contained in one thread! Etc etc

I, for one, also do not like to sift through a 10 page thread to discuss the latest Springbok team. In fact I usually stop checking out a thread when it gets above five pages as by then it is usually way off topic and not much of value is added.

As regards this team I see mention that the biggest concerns are too many loose forwards, only two hookers and then of course the omission of BJ. Read the opinion of one journalist here. Although I am not his biggest fan and feel he always has something negative to say until we win and then he gleefully reports on that without apology!

Oh boy... I don't want to be captain pessimism or anything, but I think we're going to struggle a bit.

Some odd selections by PDV but every new coach comes with such odd selections. I remember when Carel selected Percy at outside center, Jake convincing Os to come out of retirement prior to the world cup was considered odd as was Kitch playing Mark Andrews at 8th man for the semi final and final of the 95 world cup. I'm sure there countless other examples, some less costly/affective than others but I hope Brian and the beast can vindicate PDV's decision to include them ahead of BJ. Also JP, I would have loved Tonderai to be given another chance...JP for me way off form at the mo...

When have we not struggled in a Tri-nations? To be honest, traditionally we have suffered some of our most humiliating and embarrassing defeats in this competition. We've also dished it out though, who could forget the 61-22 drubbing of the Aussies in 96?

May I ask why? Because of the selection of Mujati? Or because of the selection of JP (he has been there before)? Just not sure of your reasoning here... or are you just being fashionably negative?

Our record in NZ hasn't been particularly good in recent years.. I wouldn't say stating the obvious IE "we going to struggle a bit" to be negative. Tmoose Merely stating a well documented fact. I reckon we got a 50% chance of winning, no more no less... What say you Lancelot?

It's funny but general "expert" consensus seems to be that this may be our best chance in many a year to get one over on the All Blacks. They have problems with a number of guys retiring, and a few injuries including captain Richie McCaw...

So again I ask why TMoose feels we are going to struggle. And history may show we usually struggle but these comments of his were posted in the squad announcement thread so I think I am justified in asking what his thinking is. Does it relate to the squad selection?

I for one feel, and yes I always do, that we are going to whip those bloody kiwis and aussies this year!

but yet you continue in a Sharks thread thats way past 5 pages eh ..... strange that  Keep creating tons of different Springbok threads then ...... litter the subsection and keep everyone from discussing in a central thread ..... whatever.

Or you could just come trolling on a thread without providing any input if that makes you feel better......

well I'm the target of your response, so it can't be trolling ..... just a fact.

Well Lancelot, I feel we're going to struggle because of a large number of factors, none of them most of the people here would agree with. Firstly we have a horrible record in New Zealand, secondly we have a new coach and I don't think he's a good one, thirdly our performances so far this year have been very worrying to me. The inclusion of Watson in the Tri-Nations team is, I feel, a big mistake. I also don't feel many of the new players are ready for the All Blacks and will be taken by surprise. In fact, I would be surprised if we manage to win any of our away games in the tournament.

Pieter de Villiers reminds me of Rudolf Straueli and how people reacted to him when he first became coach. Especially in 2003 World Cup when we defeated Samoa and everybody was going on about how we had a good chance to take the tournament. I was also unfashionably negative then.

I also saw nothing in how we played Wales or Italy that would leave the All Blacks with anything but big smiles. In the Italy test we dominated almost every single facet of play and yet didn't manage to score points. New Zealand and Australia will punish us in similar situations.

But it's all my personal opinion.

The way I see it we have the advantage in the lineouts against NZ but they have the advantage in the scrum and we the tight loose. Loose forwards would have been even but with Mcaw gone we may have a small advantage. They have the better flyhalf but we have the better centres. They have better wings and fullback. All in all it is going to be close. A lot is down to the mindset of the players on the day.

I used to think BJ was a good prop but last year he was made to look ordinary. There are other props who are unluckier not to be in the team (Heinke for one). I would not point a finger at the Zimbo's. I did not hink that CJ or Guthro have been scrumming well. Looking at the under 20's we could be in for a few lean years.

Yip! :)

But thanks for explaining... we'll only know how correct you are in a few weeks...
Dude, I'd be the first to go "YES! I'm wrong!". I'd love nothing more than to make me a nice tall glass of Oros using Kiwi tears.

I like this analysis... I for one agree with the props that have been tried. None of them have really impressed. Guthro always dissapoints me. Beast just needs time and still seems to tire towards the end. Perhaps it is due to the rest of the work he does around the park.

I am not to sure I agree with the NZ advantage in the scrums though... remember they have lost Carl Hayman and both experienced locks, Chris Jack (retired) and Ali Williams (injured). It will be a battle!

Flyhalf will be interesting as Butch has added some deft touches to his flyhalf play too. My concern is if he gets injured but I suppose the same applies to NZ.

Mindset will play a big part! NZ could other be out to prove a point after the World Cup humiliation or they could be feeling vulnerable with the loss of players to retirement and injury. South Africa could be going in believing they can win in NZ!

All I know is it is going to be good!!!
