Sprucing up the Linux desktop

Gnome, the desktop environment favoured by the likes of Ubuntu Linux, is getting an overhaul. For users this means a number of things, including a new way of interacting with files and a new way of launching and managing applications.

Don't think Ubuntu 10.10 will have gnome 3 [by default] in it, so for ubuntu expect next year for gnome 3.

Feels like Gnome has been lagging behind, but I've always liked that 'simple' feel it always had.

No it won't seeing the release of Gnome 3 coincides with 10.10 there will be no time to include it.

for that reason im still not convinced about the look and feel of shell, but I will wait till gnome 3 is released before passing final judgment

I prefer the current Gnome.

Unity will be included as the default UNR interface. (Mark spoke about it today at his keynote speech at the UDS in Belguim)

I don't care much for gnome shell, its early days, i tried it and I had to do everything the long way just to get anywhere.

Well, from what I have seen and read, it looks nice. But I would first like to play with it before I decide.

I'm sure if it really flops someone will fork the current Gnome 2.X and keep that going...
