SSD prices in freefall .. article

That's a bit of a pain. I thought the license key was associated/linked with the MOBO/CPU serial number and not the hardrive?

I think Microsoft sees it as a fundamental hardware change and therefore requires reactivation.

I ended up getting an activation code for Windows through the Microsoft call center. Office 2013 was more of a pain though as I have a HUP license. The call centre didn't understand that one very well. I had to uninstall completely, then reinstall from the HUP site. Still gave me the 30 day activation thing, but just ignored it and after 30 days it went away :)

I tried that JHB number they give, but when I call the call just ends. Such a las as I actually decided to buy windows 8 the legit way after a lifetime of cracked OS use.

I now remember why I never bought an OS before this.

-----------------------
Is there a way to export the key from the old drive and import it to the new installation? ( I recalled in XP we did that somehow )

No, it's not the key that's the issue, it's the activation requirement. I actually had the same key as I cloned the drive across.

I had to re-activate my Win7 license twice because my mobo died. When Windows asks you to activate your license, your PC will give you a long code, you enter that when you phone the JHB number that is displayed on your PC and they give you a new code. Enter that on the PC and it's sorted. Takes about 10 minutes. Never had Office so no comment there.

I'm waiting for Win10 to drop, then I'll get an SSD and install Win10 on that. Don't want to format twice in a year.

Picking up my 250gb SSD from Wootware (for R1,499) either today or tomorrow! Can't wait :)

Okey cool cool I will do this after work. Thanks so much.

Had a 840 EVO shipped from Amazon in December for under R1600. Not the best of its generation as I heard that there are issues with it, still I did not mess around with adding any drivers or firmware at all, just installed it into the cd rom bay and good to go. Running Win7 and I don't do updates very often, actually been a while now.

Moved my dev VM across. Recently added the page file as well. Can host 3 VM's with the 8GB ram satisfactorily. What I don't see is fast compilation, I was hoping VS 2008 would be blazing but I haven't much seen the difference. Still running Win 7 on the hard drive that came with the laptop. Guess I am not optimized for performance just yet.

Currently have this issue...

I don't know how to activate my licence again.

I still have the old harddrive is there a way to export that key to the new ssd installation?

Just for future reference if the drive were still working and in a machine: Try using Magical Jellybean Keyfinder to get the license key. The product key is useless for registration, haven't tried using it to register over the phone though.

That is a very optimistic way to look at it. :D

Not at all, but if I’m able to extend it why shouldn’t I? :p

Yeah, I wanted to do this as well. Mostly so it stops vibrating when copying over stuff. Also the laptop would be whisper quiet then.

Pulled the trigger on a 500GB 850 EVO. Can't wait.

Is there a huge performance gain in terms of battery life when you use a SSD?

Depends on the drive and your workload. With a SSD your system drops back into idle mode faster when doing disk operations, so you may see anything from a minor to a major improvement. I saw an extra half hour when putting my drive into my netbook. Using low power drives like the Corsair LX or the Crucial BX100, that would extend the savings further. I reckon 40 minutes is the most I'd be able to squeeze out of it.

177 dollars, so R2200 give or take, excluding customs and shipping.
