I got a bit of money to spend at the end of the month deciding between a keyboard, SSD drive, another Hard drive, Corsair H100 or maybe a combination of them

So i just wanted to find some information out.

I got a 2 TB WD Caviar Black and was planning on just adding a SSD (Vertex) but was thinking this morning if it might not be better to get another identical HDD and then put them in Raid, but Raid 0 is a bit dodgy I don't want to kill my data and Raid 1 wastes all my(space) benefits of buying the HDD over the SDD

If I do end up doing this will still end up getting the SSD later this year.

Will my hard drives be more likely to fail in Raid 1 compared to the single drives?

Would a SSD have much faster read times? of course my write times will suffer in comparison but is it a good sacrifice for the extra drive capacity or data reliability and SSD write degradation?

I'm also worried about the cost(any idea on pricing for the hard drive?) , last i checked prices still haven't returned to normal for Hard drives and I am guessing this is gonna set me back a lot more than the SSD would and the benefits negligible in comparison.

Beginning to think Raid is a bad idea for me atm.

ssd is 100 times better then any raid setup, no raid setup will give a seek time of a ssd.

Except a SSD in RAID

RAID0 gives you double the access time. But with an SSD that doesn't matter.
For the average or even gaming user, SSD's in RAID0 is a waste.

Depending on your budget, why not look at a Corsair Force GT 120GB? It offers really good bang for buck, and then you can spend whatever is left over, on whatever else you want.

Wasn't even thinking of seek time. well helps make my choice easier now as i can eliminate the hdd decision, thanks!

LOL, I could probably get two 120 GB SSD's from esquire for just a little more than the 2TB WD Black.

But will prob get the keyboard and 1 SSD.

hmm... how much is the Corsair Force GT 120GB and how does it compare to OCZ Vertex 3, but damn i see its not on special anymore so doubt i will be able to get anything else.

i just bought the Transcend SSD720 SATA III SSD and I am absolutely loving it. 550/500 speeds. boot time is 1/10 of the time on a normal HDD. games load faster between chapters as well.

Don't bother with SSD RAID, not worth the hassle.
I see the Vertex 4 is out, and the pricing seems to be much more decent that I expected.

Yea with sata3 ssd's pushing 500 r/w raid is not needed unless you will make use of more than that.

Yeah, one day in future when SSD's get to the point where they're actually big (and cheap) enough to be used as storage drives for movies etc. (for those who do a lot of video editing or massive image manipulation) I'd consider RAID again. It'll take a very long time though.

Also, isn't the TRIM restriction still an issue with SSD RAID drives?
