SSID conundrum

First time poster here

Installed a new WiFi router using the same SSID name and password I used on the stock standard router supplied by my provider a year ago. Network speed dropped from 50mbps to 1mbps. Realised after lots of pain, I needed to change the name of my network, works fine now. Upgraded from a tenda to a tp link archer a6.

Any ideas why this would happen?

Was the original router still broadcasting a wireless signal at the sametime? If so then interference might explain it if they were on the same channel.

That or the new router / ap also had dhcp enabled and caused everything to die due to multiple dhcp servers on the same subnet and ssid

dhcp makes sense, routers never broadcasted at the same time.
