a web designer i used has created a website for us but has used a CMS called stackspace (www.stackspace.co.za) now i'm told i cant move the website at it requires stackspace to run and he owns it :wtf:

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

thanks a mill

Link to the website please?
PM me if you don't want to post it publically... I highly doubt that there are any local web devs capable if building their own CMS and then templates ontop of that.

Also, do you have access to the Control Panel?

Edit: the stackspace website sucks, the company behind it seems to have let their domain name expire (It has now been reacquired). In summary you are dealing with a 1 man shop that seems to have closed down.

yeah send the link.
highly doubt that stackspace have developed their own server to run propriety code - i call bull****

Your webdesigner Rampage (Wordpress) Used a CMS Stackspace?

Did you not pay him for the site? Did he disclose that the code would not be yours when you moved? What kinda BS is this O.o

Reminds me of that old Ecom thing I saw back in the day... thought these systems got outlawed :/

and no he wont give me access to cpanel, he says he cant give me an individual login as he has a group hosting account.

I really hope that by "a fortune", you mean "not much at all" but anway. Looks like it's hosted with Hetzner at the top level so if it really comes to it you could probably get them to give you access to the files but you'd probably need some serious proof.

Tell him he's FOS though because at the very least he could give you a dump of the database and ftp access to the files. Has he never sent you any kind of details like that?

At worst, and assuming that you're the registrant listed on the whois here: http://www.enom.com/whois/default.aspx
you can prove ownership of the domain and move it somewhere else. You'll lose your content though.

So if I am to understand all of this...

The system/website cannot run outside of the server its currently hosted on?

if

no: then wtf

yes: then ftp content to another server and test it

fi

Sorry bad habits there...

More importantly, would you mind disclosing how much you have paid for this site?

PM me if you need help, I will do what I can to help you :)

I call BS that it cant run outside of Hetzner and also BS that he can't give you access.
This guy is a little 1 man show ripping people off claiming that he does some dev work which requires you to be tied in for life.
I would suggest finding your docs and getting in touch with Hetzner, they are very open to disputes and will assist you. If you paid for it you own it.

ps I have sniped the domain which the domain stackspace.co.za is registered to as someone didn't pay their renewal fee's. That makes me the legal owner of stackspace :) If he wants to play hardball he will lose quite a few of his domains.

Pawnzorz... Dont start that thing where things just... No, bad vibes create bad faith bro, also if he is the owner of the company Uniform will side with him and your snipe wont help but stall the process...

We get this is probably a 1 man show and it actually really just puts a bad taste in my mouth to think people still do this kinda thing... These aren't the works real IT professionals. Hell I make money but most of what I do is inspired by "Richard Stallman" and his philosophy on open source and free software :/ But this is not a GNU/Opensource situation I suppose... **Rambling**

Lets just try and find a way to solve things xD

Thats all we want, we should be able to do what we want with the site and be able to update it with whoever we want and however we want.

Chances are he might have written something in ROR or perhaps even PHP which is proprietary. It's not that difficult. But if you paid a lot of money for the website and want to move hosting, I suggest you get a lawyer on your side. Even if the code is proprietary, he still has to give it to you, even if he encodes it and don't allow you to see the code. He'll have a hard time trying to defend himself in court in this case. But it all depends on how much you paid for the website, what kind of financial loss you can claim due to downtime of website, incompatibility with client browsers, loosing clients due to badly designed website, etc.

I suggest you plan on moving your website to something like Wordpress, Drupal or Joomla!, or any other open source app that you prefer to use. I hear Dolphin is also quite powerful.

I don't care what the naysayers say. Let the haters hate. Don't use a custom developed app. Unless the company who develops it has at least 3 directors and have been in business for at least 5 years. Rather use open source apps which can be taken over by any one of a few million developers and web masters worldwide. It's an expensive lesson to learn, I know, but your business will reap the benefits if you get this fixed.

This is common dodgy website design practice.

I dont know how many times an unqualified web designer has taken business away from a host, by lying to the client that the website can "only run on their servers". This website is normally a wordpress website. Clients think the designer is telling them the truth and move their hosting. All the client gets is an amateurly run web server and is normally out of pocket for more.

I just have to say thanks so much for all the information and help I have received, what I can say we on the right track and can't say thank you enough for all the assistance. It
blows me away every time how helpful and how quick the mybroadband community is. Proud to be part of it.

It's not so much that we're helpful as we hate seeing awful people dragging down the whole industry :D
