Staff departures at Neotel

lol @ the NeoTel broken cable logo, portrays NeoFail perfectly.

The company needs to be bought out buy Mweb or DarkFiberAfrica, that's the only way they will ever be of use.

I really feel for the old Transtel guys that are now being put out to pasture. Many of them have been sidelined (and ignored) from day 1 at neotel and, imo, this was where they made a big mistake.

Good luck to all my ex-Transtel buddies...

Government + BEE = Fail in every business

Neotel is the only major SA telco with no government shareholding whatsoever. BEE's non-negotiable for all telcos, if they want to keep their licences.

I think you've got your scales mixed up. M-Web's much smaller than Neotel as a business, and you may want to look up their results (more or less permanent loss-making, as part of Naspers), before you draw that comparison. The only reason M-Web is still around in its current form is because Naspers couldn't find a buyer when they had it on the market. Telkom bought M-Web Africa at the time, and look where that is. Not sure about DFA, but they seem to have shareholders with deep pockets, just like Tata.

I feel sorry for the staff that will be retrenched but if they looked better after their company this wouldn't have happened.

Neotel vs Telkom?

Many people are clueless ...... Neotel is backed by a company MANY times larger than Telkom, Naspers, DarkfiberAfrica etc. etc. combined. They will make losses for many years simply because they will have to make massive investments in fiber and other core infrastructure countrywide before they have a proper national footprint. Their only real failure has been in the consumer space.... and for this Panday has probably had to fall on his sword. As for the Transtel staff, many of them never even knew how to spell the word “service” this as they had never had the experience of attending to REAL customers. Many in the industry were well aware that Neotel inherited a nightmare with many Transtel staff..... who indeed will be the main target of retrenchments as the company tries to refocus and become customer centric.
As for the commercial side, they are already a threat to Telkom and in certain industries (i.e. financial services, banking etc.) they are taking market share in a big way as Telkom lacks the international clout or access that Neotel has in their parent company, Tata Communications. Neotel may face many hurdles, but with a shareholder with very deep pockets, failure is not one of them. Looking to the future, it is Telkom that faces an implosion far more serious than Neotel. Telkom has no real strategic shareholder, no leadership and a shareprice that for ages has only gone in one direction. In Telkom, the investment community have already clearly voted with their feet?

If you are referring to the top management departures, then I agree; but how could the operational guys do anything more without top management buy-in?

It doesn't matter if Mweb is 'smaller' than NeoTel. Believe me, Mweb is the one with the right path and they will become more than just huge in the next 5 years. They are making a profit, this is a business, they wouldn't be doing what they doing if they were not making money. Their footprint is solid and as the SA middle-class continues to grow, Mweb will be right there. Don't forget NaSpers is getting major major funds coming in from their Chinese business and on top of that they pretty much own the African Television market with their DStv.

Point is, this company -- Naspers is making heavy and major $$$, once Telkom loses it's grip on the cables, Mweb will become the equivalent to what Comcast is to the US consumers as they will probably bring in the triple play-service. Mweb's business plans > NeoFail business plans.
