Problem at work is keeping our Generator cool, currently outside under shade cloth and has only ever cut out once after 2:30hours.

Going to be interesting with 3-3:30hours

Ideas to keep generator cool besides opening all the doors, no wind anyway

What is the ambient temperature? These things are usually rated for up to 40C operating temp so if yours is overheating there may be some other issue with it. Perhaps it is being overloaded, or there is a vacuum in the fuel tank causing fuel starvation issues?

Other than misting it with a fine water spray I think not much would help to keep heat away from it. Most smaller generators have fans that wick away heat from the alternator, larger ones too in addition to radiators with fans to keep the engine from seizing.

OK, that is a large industrial unit. You would probably need to get the experts in to have a look - there could be a myriad of reasons why it overheats. Larger ones like in the picture above are usually multi-cylinder diesel jobbies that are a lot more complex than your everyday 5kva unit bought from Makro.

And it being diesel you could have an issue with the diesel pump timing to an alternator fault to a busted radiator fan - too many variables to properly diagnose over the interwebs :(

Don't play around, get an expert in, preferably the original supplier. Who does the maintenance on the plant?

Is Jhb City Power still doing the Kelvin thing and not load shedding?

I'm envious of @Mortymoose and @McT that get to enjoy 24/7 electricity up there in Nam :(

Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all you South Africans on sacrificing YOUR power so that my pool pump works and that my beers can stay cold...

Thats what friends are for....

I have a 400kva at the back of the shop, you need to service once a year and every month inspect the oil level. I had an issue about three years back, turned out he exhaust outlet had become blocked and the machine would cut out. It rusted, being outside and at the coast

How to try and polish a turd so that it seems nothing like a turd:cautious:

"Suspending load shedding during the peak traffic hours is a pilot program aimed at achieving an appropriate Loadshedding Philosophy for the country," the utility said in a statement.
