A rather shocking thing to admit to on a "public forum" (even more shocking than my political views :D) however, just recently I have started collecting stamps again. It's sort of like a family thing, my great, great grandfather started the collection a long, long time ago. My dad continued the collection when he was younger and when I was at scouts I carried on collecting.

Fast forward over 20 years and I've sort of got the bug again. We have thousands upon thousand of stamps and the collection is worth quite a bit. I've started a separate collection, and I was wondering if there were any other forumites here that were closet collectors and would be interested in swopping out some stamps?

I'm after Saffa stamps, I have a few, most are oldish but worth very little and I'd like to increase the size of my Saffa section. I'll post a pic in a while some of the stamps are very interesting (Depends on what you'd class as interesting though I suppose :D).

Anyhow if anyone has any old South African stamps that they'd like to get rid of I'd appreciate it.

I found the easiest way to collect stamps is to just NOT mail ****.

"Hey, how's your stamp collection?"
"Pretty good, since I stopped corresponding with YOU"

Cool!! When I go to my parents home I will hav a look. Because we moved around many times I tried to keep up with old friends so i might have. ( Just note i said tried) I Kept all my letters in shoe boxes. So imight find you one or two from the 80's:D

I have a book full of older stamps, plus one rather special one...

Short of the 'special one', how does one go about getting this stuff valued? I'd like to sell 'em.

Thanks.

Dude...how do you know the value of the stamps? I inherited my grandfathers collection, and have been told there are a view rare collections there. Just curious to know how rare they are and what they worth...and too scared to leave the album with someone to evaluate.

Searched the net to try find what some are worth...but have had no luck so far...

Google dude, there are loads of ways to find out, here in London we have a Stanlley Gibbons shop where they charge you ÂŁ5 to evaluate your collection (if it's not too big) otherwise they have it over night.

Look out for Christies Auctioneers who sometimes take a trip out to SA.

Or:

http://www.freestampcatalogue.com/app
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamp_catalog
http://www.namibstamps.com/sapart1.htm

Sometimes Stanley Gibbons have a few pages of stamps on their site they give the values of. Today there's one worth ÂŁ18 000 on the site (Penny Black) I have one of them and I also have a penny blue however I've got the ones that are worth considerably less :( Maybe email Stanley Gibbons and get some advice?

Another thing you could do is scan the pages of the albums and send them off to someone to have a look at? It's an awesome way to identify some stamps....

Anyhoo...... I don't want to seem like collecting stamps is my life (because it's not :D), hope you are successful, if not you could always mail the albums to me (I have a sick Nigerian cousin whom I'm raising funds for :D)

The best advice I can give is go to a professional and get it valued. We found out although some of our albums have some very valuable stamps, the albums themselves are also worth a bundle.

Some catalogues you have to pay for some are free (and not as good) and the decent ones are in the region of ÂŁ70

Do you know how many people with stamps think have hit the jackpot?

I know a few people who inherrited from grandfathers etc and thought they'd make hundreds of thousands - and they got like R2,000.00 :/ Which - in my opinion - is still alot of money.

Most are disappointed.

I have a whole book full. But I'll have to get it priced first. Do you know where I can go to find out it's worth?

Yes a lot of people are disappointed that's a fact, however the chances of someone having a pretty rare stamp in a grandfathers collection are much higher than if you'd buy a pack of stamps from a stamp fair etc.

I know my albums when they were last valued (at least 12 years ago) were worth about R30 000, and the albums themselves almost R5000.

Think Im gonna do this. Rather will take out the camera and take a few pics at first and send them off. Will also mail the guy ;) Thanks

Yes, if your gramps did a decent job you should at least know where the stamps come from. If you have that it's easier to identify the stamps properly and then you could get a more accurate valuation. Look for stamp collectors on Facebook etc as well.
