Star Citizen

Getting into in what sense? It's an alpha,so your just playing the features and seeing the existing bugs.

Personally I'm not touching it until squadron42 is released.

Well, to those that already have access to the game, does it seem like this will become a reality? Do you get the feeling of the grandness that they advertise?

I'm craving a game that gives you a scale of space and gives you a free amount of freedom to just explore.

I waited on No Man's Sky (basically promised some of what I am looking for in a game) until reviews started coming in and that got taken to pieces.

Got access myself, not to the Evocati‎ which is the big one 3.0, and when i played I just ended up frustrated, couldn't get on the same instance as my friends, couldn't get off the landing pad due it other ships blocking. Was a frustrating experience. I was hoping to jump back on when i get access to 3.0, but after watching some who had access, I think i'm going to wait for 3.1 or 3.2.

You will get that from this game, just not right now.

No Man's lie was pretty obvious from early interviews with that clown. But don't try put Star citizen in the same boat, the Scope of SC is larger than that of No mans sky or any other space sim/shooter game, its close to Elite Dangerous, better than Elite Dangerous in my eyes, some would argue otherwise though. But ED does not have the First person feel. Maybe ED is what you can play until SC is complete.

Oh an almost forget they have free fly week/ends. Which you may have full access to try the game. So perhaps wait till that event to purchase.

Is this worth getting in to?

It looks the type of game I've always had in my mind.

Only if you want to support the development as don’t expect a full game for quite a while.

There are things you can do in the current alpha builds but it’s pretty limited. That being said I’ve had a lot of fun just mucking about with a squad and creating our own gameplay scenarios. Haven’t played in a while though as there has been an update drought waiting for alpha 3.0.

I have access, and I love what has been playable so far with limited features. 3.0 is going to be huge but I think if your not sure at this stage, then maybe wait a bit more. The game is quite far from anything you can sink 300 hours in before stopping for the first time.

And the other question, yes, I think it will finish. If it doesn't then I am completely proud to have spent my earnings on creating the most elaborate scheme in gaming history, and to be part of that hoax. They put in a stupid amount of effort, to say it won't release at this stage is just being silly IMO.

The two alternatives I can think of right now might be:

1. Eve Online
2. Space Engineers

Depending on what exactly you're after.

Eve Online is cool but many find it tedious and boring. It really is a game highly dependent on the social aspect. If you're a lone ranger type trying to make a big difference, don't bother. But there's an FPS shooter integration (Project Nova) in the pipeline. There's also talk of some integration with Eve Valkyrie but nothing concrete. And a mobile game in 2018 called Project Aurora, but likely won't be integrated.

Space Engineers is good for construction and building (Like a super advanced Minecraft). I just wish it had an economy, trading and open world system. But it does scratch that itch of being able to land on planets and have the sandbox vibe about it. Apparently there's an economy mod but I doubt it is on the scale I want it to be as Space Engineers isn't structured to be an MMO. I feel if it just had that aspect it'd be a great game!!

Hope I eat my words but I think Star Citizen will fail. Nobody can quite grasp what it aims to be yet (Well maybe just me :p). Unless it has a persistent economy and industry like Eve Online perhaps.

Elite Dangerous..?

For a pure single player game you can take a look at the X-universe. Egosoft has recently announces X4 Foundations but all the others are available on steam for cheap. Egosoft Collection on Steam

Hope it's better than the last one...

The game turned out okay with all the DLC, expansions and patches. Elite with all the DLC is amazing now. I want to start playing the updated Everspace which is more action-arcade, but it looks great!

Thanks for the advice, chaps.

Elite Dangerous looks good as well. What piqued my interest with No Man's Sky and why Star Citizen has got my attention now is the fact that you can also disembark and walk around.

Chances are pretty good that they will do another free-fly period at the time 3.0 goes live. You can try the game out then and decide for yourself whether it is worth backing.

Thought I would share some pics of my first official moon landing:

What is your pc specs? if I may ask and how does it run

Had some fun this weekend as well with some landings and very very bad mission attempts.

The game is coming together and I can see a lot of progress being made, but it is still frustrating as hell with all the crashes and glitches (I know its still early dev issues)

The main problem with the current build we played over the weekend was the throttle response. It felt like there was nothing between 0 and 100%, which made flying and landing a lot more of a mission.
Even with all the issues this weekend, it was still super fun, I can't wait for the full 3.0 alpha so we can go crash into Arcorp

Ryzen 1600 paired with an RX580 and 16 GB DDR4-3000. Game runs like a dog's breakfast currently, but this is due to server-side and networking issues, which they will work to address before the patch goes live. On occasion though, I've connected to a server where the framerate was in the high-20's or 30's, and man, it feels glorious.

We're not getting ArcCorp in 3.0, at least not the full planet they demoed at CitizenCon. It's Crusader, the three moons, and Levski for now.

As for throttle response, maybe just revisit your control settings. My joystick keybinds are totally messed up now; they changed a lot of things compared to 2.6.

I thought we were getting Access to ArcCorp in 3.0, my bad. That would have been excellent.

I tried pretty much everything, even got an Xbox 360 controller to see if that solves the problem with flying. But even with the controller deadzones not being binary, it was still a case of not moving, and then suddenly being on the other end of wherever you were trying to go. Getting a Nox in a constellation is a lot harder if you can't do it carefully. We wanted to go racing on Daymar

Interesting. I tend to thing the performance issues have a lot to do with that. Everything responds more smoothly on a server with decent framerates. Damn, I really need to try out that Nox...

I played with 40+ FPs most of the time unless things were having a heart attack, but the throttle response was basically all over the show. Seemed like a definitely bug or oversight. Ill wait for more complete 3.0 builds and give it another bash.

For interest sake, what's your Hangars look like, any interesting ships in there?

The nox is brilliant, but i still prefer the dragonfly. It took us a whole day saturday to get 2 Dragonfly's in the Connie, but then as we took off the server crashed XD
