Starcraft II to feature DRM

so the problem is the innocent guys footing the bill for the guilty ones, both in terms of cost (incorperating DRM requires time and money) and inconvenience

its a lose lose situation, IMHO the only way to do it would be to price the mofo's right out of the market, put the title on the market at such a low price that it just becomes to much effort to bother with trying to crack it

After the announcement that Starcraft 2 won't offer LAN support, there is more bad news for the gamers: VG247 was told by game designed Dustin Browder that Blizzard's RTS won't offer a co-op campaign - not even via the new BattleNet

please tell me Im reading this right?

so you wont be able to do a campaign in co-op mode, but what about playing co-op against the computer in a multiplayer game?

It said co-op campaign. I'm pretty sure you'll still be able to have team skirmish games vs. a CPU player. But of course, you'll need to be online.

Someone still needs to explain to me how exactly people are going to be punished with the type of DRM that SC2 is going to have?

Honestly, I just don't understand.

No LAN play?

Yeah, that means it should be practically free. Who would develop games then? It will work if everyone and sundry is a gamer. Look at WII sales to see what I mean, yet the Nitendo prices are still high.

Do blizzard give a **** that internet access is not the same everywhere in the world compared to the states

yes you need the internet, but how much cap is this gonna chew up

it might be low...but then again it might be a ****load!

No. Moving right along.

You have to activate the game once and then "log in" everytime you want to play. Are you honestly going to use THAT much bandwidth?

Hell, you have to log in to BF2(bandwidth hog of note) to play on-line and that hardly uses anything, maybe 100-400k. I'm just guessing here.

Honestly, I don't think that anyone has ever bothered measuring the amount of bandwidth it takes to log into a game. And you're worried about this? :erm:

Still don't understand since SC2 doesn't have LAN anyway.

They took away LAN play to force Battle.net down your throat.

They force Battle.net down your throat to prevent piracy.

Piracy is to be prevented by Battle.net's DRM scheme.

Savvy?

Yes, but how does this inconvenience you as a gamer? How does logging in to play a game make Blizzard "Satanzorz eating my babiez!!!!!"?

Sigh...

Because I'd like to LAN SC2. You know, like in the good old days when you and a couple of buddies got together and played a few games of StarCraft. Or like when you went to Mayhem. Now you won't be able to without an internet connection. I guess they're just not as ubiquitous in the outdoors here as they are in the big US of A.

well the drm doesnt bother me to much. like the quote said, its more about battle.net. so why bother complaining? its a multiplayer game than can only be played online, so people should just accept the drm and move on

Once you have millions of copies of games sold then it's a numbers game to them. They don't care if they piss off the 100k+ users that actually knows **** about rights/security and the difference of online vs offline and lan play...

Because, in the end, they'll sell millions of copies ANYWAY

Well you never know. I play Heroes of Newerth and that eats up between 30 - 40 MB per 30min game. Graphics intense games can tend to chow bandwidth.

I've played this game since it's release in '99, signed the online petition since 2004 everyday for months on end under different names when i felt shortchanged that blizzard announced WOW(no disrespect to WOW) instead of SC2(SC2 was supposed to follow war3 wasn't it? didn't the universe work like that?!?!?!). Frequented their website on a daily basis just in case of an announcement(at the time they were on a hiring spree so i got really excited). Did applied mathematics projects with starcraft as the subject in 3rd year. Was 1st in line everytime Karune had something to say. This was the ONE game i was looking forward to, single player campaign for the amazing storyline and multiplayer for the endless 'ling roasting.

So what happened:
1. Will be released in 3 parts. Ok, its tuff economic times and blizzard wants to make a great game for me so i'll let them have 3 chances to produce.(denialism sets in)
2. No lan. Wtf?!?! k, no worries someone will make a pvpgn so's i can lan at home(denialism on another level)
3. Delay to 2010. K, they still polishing(now denialism going into overdrive)
4. Forcing B.Net to use this DRM ****. OMG!!!! (truth finally dawns, so expect some anger now before acceptance)

The game is done! they not releasing it! For what? Balancing? No! to make money! I've been pc gaming for 20 years and this was the last game i was gonna play religiously before i really get into middle age and real life! I would seriously have paid R1000 for this game, EACH INSTALLMENT, because i love this game so much!

FSCK YOU BLIZZARD ACTIVISION!!! Whatever admiration i had for you as a company has completely and utterly evaporated!
Bring on C&C!!!(sacrilege to me 5 mins ago)
Im done waiting for the blizzard cash cow. QED

Yeah, I can understand that point of view. Never really LANed SC much, but the times I did were fun. The general impression tho is that someone somewhere will sort something out.

Game I wont be buying.............

Voting with your wallet is best thing to do if you're not happy with a game....... it's just a shame that most will then go and pirate it.

Indeed, most games can be quite bandwidth hungry, but I'm talking about the bandwidth required to JUST log into BNET. Not playing online. HTC_guy was complaining saying that logging in was going to chew up his bandwidth. It won't, but actually playing the game might.
