Lead designer explains that it's more about Battle.net than piracy

They (Blizzard) bluntly said it's about stopping piracy, however, they're going to try push Battle.net too now as a bonus.

The harder they try to stop piracy the more ppl will pirate. I get so pissed off the company's dont realise that lowering prices sells more copy's and makes up in volume(and subscription of battle.net)

The SC II saga has become a piracy challenge.

To me it's quite interesting that:
1 - Blizzard is using the popular Starcraft name to make more money from the brand.
2 - Blizzard is failing to understand what made SC so popular in the first place.
3 - Blizzard seems to be enjoying the free publicity they are getting from this.
4 - Blizzard are not even slightly concerned about the anger they are generating.
5 - Blizzard's latest delay announcement is in line with a company desperate to produce a product that simply cannot be pirated.

The release of this game may prove to be the ultimate DRM proving grounds. If the game is popular, and Blizzard make money from it, then DRM will become firmly entrenched in every game produced across the entire industry. In this case, it's going to be sales figures that clench the deal.

If the game is cracked / pirated, it will be pirated to the extreme, with people flaunting their pirated copies like trophies and blowing fat raspberries @ Blizzard for not giving them what they want.

If you look at the Battlefield 2 franchise, the fans begged and begged for more official maps and content, and were ignored. The fans have produced so much custom content that the games you now play on the Battlefield 2 engine hardly resemble the original game. In this case, E.A. Games could simply have given the gamers what they were asking for.

Interesting times ahead.
Brute DRM vs giving the customer what they want.

You guys don't understand though... It's pretty simple: The post-WoW Blizzard is not the same as the pre-WoW Blizzard.

Blizzard is dead to me.

QFT. Just because of this I WILL now get a pirate copy.

i really don't like the fact that my single-player experience is "limited" if i dont play it online.

why the hell should I have to play singleplayer ONLINE?

does blizzard know how expensive bandiwth is here :(

so no LAN support, DRM, and you even have to play ur singleplayer online? This isn't simply pushing Battle.net, this is akin to anti-trust lawsuits against Microsoft for including IE with the OS! Blizzard is forcing you to use their new Battle.net, instead of letting you simply decide for yourself with good marketing.

This really sucks, I'll be pirating the hell out of this game =/.

Sounds familiar to .... Valve/Steam/HL2 release?

Yip.. Blizzard don't give a crap. They have 5million + people paying them per month for WoW... do you really think they care about us...

Tis very sad, I've been waiting for the game for years now, a report says its coming out next year only due to Battle.Net, we should boycott all games with DRM and make the gaming world crash. They need to understand that we are the consumers and what we want is key to revenue! Screw DRM, makes me want to go get the pirate copy just because they have DRM on it. Don't blame me when I purchase a pirate copy because even if I buy it legit, I still feel like I'm the criminal...Thank you DRM

Why bother? Just get it DRM-free at the next LAN. Even Steam with its integrated on-line authenticated superpower DRM isn't hack-proof and you can get any of its games at your local LAN. DRM only punishes the legitimate user and is by far the most insipid thing ever to accompany the digital age.

I can see from all these heated responses that this issue clear gets under some peoples skin, just a quick question, how much would you be willing to pay for the original? R50, R100, R200?

Dude, I'd pay the R350 that it's going to cost. That's what it costs and that's what I'm used to paying for a new game these days. What I'm balking at is the restrictions placed on my use of the item. Restrictions that are there only to curb the use by people who aren't going to pay for it anyway. There's not a DRM scheme on the planet that can't be circumvented, and yet *I* have to pay for the development and maintenance of this one, when it does nothing to stop the people who aren't buying the software anyway.
