Starting out with Sonoff

It is easy with a Sonoff SV. See https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/sonoff-sv-as-a-relay-gate-motor.1064298/ . It can simulate pressing a remote button either at the motor or at the intercom / remote wired switch.
Thanks I will have a look and check! Could maybe even connect the gate and both garages and do the scenes thing...am yet to flash my Sonoffs with other firmware as doing some research on which HUB is best suited for us. I don't have a MQTT server setup yet so China is sitting with my routes for the next couple of weeks at least.

Was talking about the switch itself. They have no connection for a neutral wire. It is unlikely that an electrician will run a neutral to the switch box. Using a standard 2 core + E wire, you use the red wire to get Live to the switch and the black or blue wire to take the Live back to the light. The switch is normally sited a distance from the light, so it is a hassle to run an extra wire to the switch box that will not be used.

do you just want to argue and completely miss other peoples points?

I suppose the only way to find that out is to take off this plug? (I don't want to fiddle - in fear I can't place it back neatly...)

yep, loosten it and open it up, there should be plenty space to put it all back unless there is something very weird going on in there, in which case you would never fit the smart switch anyway as it needs more room.

looks like you might be lucky, that set of black/blue wires in the chocolate block just hanging around not connected to anything else is probably the neutrals, whoever did this wiring job should be raped.

edit: this is 2 way switching... these are probably not your neutrals

So its possible?
Yes, they never heard of 4 core before.

SA Light switches never have a neutral wire running to them. The switch only "breaks" the Live to turn the light off.

I am lost man..

if it were me i would change the wiring using what is existing, for 2 way switching with a smart switch you can create scenes, both light switches don't actually need to be connected to the light. this way you would have enough wiring to connect the neutrals. the one "master" switch would be connected to the light and the other "slave" would simply toggle the master.

Yes, but count on not having a neutral as most houses aren't wired that way.

Assuming the flat does not have a neutral - what are the options?
You wouldn't have any lights or power if it didn't. You'll just need to run a neutral wire from another source to the switch. I took mine off the light itself.

I didnt know about ESPHome
I would seriously recommend it. Takes a bit of getting used to as there is more config involved in setting your device up. But once you have done one, it's pretty much copy and paste with a few edits thereafter. No lag in button presses or commands from HA and its super stable.

That is what I meant, what if the plug itself does not have the neutral - it's a flat - the ceiling is concrete so can climb in to run a wire?

(obviously I know less than fckhol about wiring in a building)

If it was me I’d get an electrician in to do at least one of them so you know what needs to be done.

Probably best you get an electrician to do it for you.

Ya this is seeming like the best idea
My roof is a loft with no drop ceiling so I just want to know if it possible without pulling another cable as that will cause all kinds of issues.
