State backs Eskom on tariff increase

Price hike on Petrol that will be going to R9 a liter
Price increase on electricity...

Their is no hope in this future, I was speaking to lady who bought a car, quite recently her repayments on the car was around R2200, now she is coughing out another R1 grand, now I know why January repossessions were high..

Look at the industry that are consuming more electricity.
Close down the Casino Industry.....
Mines are getting majority of the Electricity it's discussting the states we living in this country...

I've another 2 years, and I'm out of here...
Going to start a fresh new life elsewhere.
Qualified people with degree, mba, etc Are leaving fast, applications are flooding like tomorrow will not come.
Load-Shedding is making things worst in this country.. ICT sector uses 50,

hey wait a minute what happens at a casino when the power goes off. do they have backups (i would assume they do) and can their computers also crash as ours can and have done in a sudden blackout.

Well first of all remember, that in this country..
They say use electricity wisely, well I know many jobs would be lost in such industry, and sometimes I'm very happy blackout do a cure at times, more money to be spent on Diesel, and powering up the Grid of all the Video Machines :)... I'm sure an industry like that have back-up solutions and UPS.. for computers, database etc, important information :) Well the casino is a Multi-Billion industry, I've seeing people loose companies, families, sports cars, empire that were built..........

Government is offsetting the required reduction in power usage with an increase in price in order not to take a knock in Eskom's income. It is all planned and extremely frigging dodgy!

Yes, it's planned, but...

...it also is a matter of economics, which is: make something more expensive and cause a reduction of the use of what is more expensive, hence reduce the demand-load on the energy producer.

It's just economics. The big question is...will Eskom use the added revenues wisely. Probably not. Bigger bonuses, more likely. More marketing $ spend on selling the nuclear solution that would be hailed as the savior of the situation.

have you guys seen this "back dating" they're on about?surely it can't be legal - you agree to pay x per kWh now - not dependent on whether they get to increase the power price later on!

Considering that most of the capacity is used by industry; what effect would that have? The mines would probably just absorb any additional costs - it would still be profitable to get the gold out. BUT they will reduce their usage if they're asked to. However, they are saying that if they have to reduce capacity it will lead to closing a few shafts here and there which will result in thousands of jobs lost.

So in the end we'll have higher prices and be out by several thousands of jobs.

Not exactly an equitable solution.

I'm going to stick my neck out, hope it doesnt get chopped off!

I actually agree with the Eskom price increase as much as I dont like paying more every month!

If you accept that the gov. and Eskom have made a complete b^*^$ up by letting us get into this sorry situation, normal economics then dictates that there is no way we can carry on having the cheapest electricity in the world whilst not having enough to go round. The responsible thing to do is raise the price dramatically becuase that gives the commodity its correct value (supply and demand), but more importantly, should automatically make all consumers and industry adjust their usage behaviour. If something is very cheap, there is no incentive to conserve it, as soon as becomes expensive, people naturally find ways to save it or substitute it. Not to mention it provides Eskom with extra cash to rectify the issue (if they are bright enough not to waste it - a big if).

The caveats are that the price should be raised equally for all consumers and that when the supply problem is rectified and electricity becomes freely available again then the price should come down accordingly.
