Gordhan to finally appear before Zondo commission

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan is expected to deliver his long-awaited testimony before the commission of inquiry into state capture on Monday.
Gordhan is expected to detail how some of his own Cabinet colleagues allegedly resisted — and attacked — treasury for looking into suspected corruption. According to Gordhan, some government officials were trying to halt crucial legislation that would give the government more power to scrutinise the banking affairs of politicians and politically connected business people.
Gordhan was set to testify over a month ago, but his appearance before the commission — chaired by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo — was postponed after he failed to submit his full statement to the commission’s legal team on time.

Jackson Mthembu defends Pravin Gordhan against Malema and his EFF ‘bullies’

The ANC chief whip says he’s backing Gordhan against EFF insults out of principle and refuses to fear the party’s ‘stormtroopers’.
ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu, in a series of tweets, showed support for Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan in the face of accusations from the EFF ahead of his testimony at the commission of inquiry into state capture.
Mthembu questioned EFF leader Julius Malema’s assertion that Pravin Gordhan was an “enabler of state capture”, saying that if the EFF had any evidence they should “do the right thing and deposit an affidavit to this effect” with the commission, chaired by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

Tom Moyane wants to apply to cross-examine Pravin Gordhan

Axed SA Revenue Service (Sars) boss Tom Moyane will lodge an application to cross-examine public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan at the state capture inquiry.
Moyane and Gordhan have had an antagonistic relationship from the time Gordhan was finance minister.
Gordhan is testifying at the commission on Monday, where he will talk about his time as a cabinet minister under former president Jacob Zuma.
Gordhan served as finance minister twice and as co-operative governance and traditional affairs minister. During his second stint as finance minister, Gordhan butted heads with Moyane.

Last month the commission ruled that anyone wanting to cross examine a witness, must first place their own version of the evidence in writing. I don't see Moyane risking that...

Of course not, but he'll threaten all sorts of court action if he doesn't get his way...

That will open them up for cross examination. So Tom please bring it on. We all want to hear your version of reality.

State capture was evident as early as 2014, Gordhan tells inquiry

JOHANNESBURG - The state capture phenomenon had been around as early as 2014 in South Africa during former president Jacob Zuma's administration, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan told the state capture commission of inquiry on Monday.
He said individual corrupt activities, through procuring goods and services from third parties at inflated prices, has been around since 2009.
"These acts [of corruption] were popular as early as 2009, such as the story of a bottle of water. The bottle costs you R6 at a shop, but government is charged R40 a bottle [by third parties]. Another phenomenon spiked in 2015 in many institutions, regarding procuring complex pieces of equipment and spares, for example, that of an aircraft," Gordhan said.
"Policy decision was taken by boards that there will be no buying directly from manufacturer. Buying from a company in East rand which has no capacity to produce that part, would cost you $16 million than the $40 at the manufacturer, you will pay $16m. This is to illustrate the level at which [state capture] starts," he said.

#StateCaptureInquiry: Denel Asia joint venture created to 'rob' Denel

Johannesburg - Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan says the Denel Asia joint venture was created specifically to rob state-owned entity Denel of its intellectual property.
Denel Asia was to be a joint venture between VR Laser Asia, which was owned by Gupta associate Salim Essa, and state armed manufacturer Denel.
VR Laser South Africa was owned by Duduzane Zuma and Rajesh Gupta. Gordhan told the state capture inquiry during his testimony on Monday that the Denel board was captured.
When asked how he concluded this, he cited the investigation by Amabhugane which showed how various Denel board members were regulars in Dubai and had their personal expenses paid by the Guptas.
There was collusion between the Guptas and the Denel board led by Daniel Mantsha, who is now former president Jacob Zuma’s lawyer, Gordhan revealed.
When Des van Rooyen was hired as the new finance minister, following Nhlanhla Nene’s dismissal in December 2015, an application for approval of the Denel Asia deal was submitted to his office.

EFF vows to expose 'all of Gordhan’s shenanigans’

JOHANNESBURG - The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has vowed to bring down Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, saying the party is determined to expose what it calls “all his shenanigans.”
The red berets picketed outside the state capture commission on Monday afternoon where the minister has been testifying.
So far, Gordhan has told the commission he was re-appointed to the Finance Ministry in 2016 because of the turmoil in the markets triggered by former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene's axing.
He also told the commission former President Jacob Zuma was determined to pursue the nuclear deal with Russia even when it was clear the country could not afford it.
EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu has made serious accusations against Gordhan.
“His daughter, Alicia Gordhan, has got more than eight companies

If the government knew about all this like he says back in 2009 then they are complicit in the crimes if they never took action against it. Ignoring it isn't innocence.

He mentioned SAA could have saved 1 billion buy buying plane parts firstly from manufacturers instead of middle men companies adding zero value but charge inflated prices. They knew what is going on. They allowed it. This is sickening.
