State Hospital Revitalisation

Finally someone admits that state hospitals are in desperate need of a revamp and it looks like they're actually going to do something about it. At least some of our taxes can be put to good use

South Africa will spend billions of rands to improve healthcare by renovating dilapidated hospitals, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said on Monday.

Motsoaledi, doctors, engineers and Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA) representatives were attending a workshop aimed at preparing for the revamp of Durban's King Edward VIII Hospital.

The hospital is one of five that will receive a massive, billion-rand facelift, Motsoaledi said.

The other hospitals are Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in the Eastern Cape, Dr George Mukhari and Chris Hani Baragwanath hospitals in Gauteng, and the Limpopo Academic Hospital.

This is the only concern for me

He said they have decided to involve all health stakeholders in the revitalisation programme.

"This has never been done before. We are discussing how it can be done and we will be forming task teams."

No revitalisation in the Western Cape. Not the government being funny but rather acknowledging that things do work they way they are meant to when the funds are put to proper use.

You know, a hospital cannot run properly if the person in charge does not have a up to date decorated office...

While I share your skepticism of most things government , there's just something about this Mostoaledi chap that seems different to me ... somehow he appears genuine about improving the bunfight that is our state health system

Tygerberg hospital is a disgrace. When last were you there?

It reminded me of the Black mesa facility in Half-Life.

Never been there - and have no intention of ever going there. The health minister said that the hospitals in the WC were okay. In fact, he said Groote Schuur was in pristine condition.

I suppose it depends to what you compare it to.

Although it seems that Mostoaledi wants to do things right, I have the feeling things will go southwards once the tenders phase kicks in ...

We are actually.

Also we are one of the strongest emerging economies. You have to spend money to make money, this is what they are doing.

Also remember that a lot of the projects that you have listed are being funded by the public sector.
