Hey everyone

I had a broadband R149 pm contract that i had to cancell early as im leaving the country. So when i phoned MTN i was told i had to pay in R1096 and the contract would be cancelled, i have done this and the number was cancelled the following day.

A few weeks later i received my monthly invoice for the number that was cancelled with and outstanding amount of R3500.... WTF!! I quickly phoned them and they said it was because it was a early cancellation... i have proof that my original call that the operator said it will only be R1096...

Now MTN said it will take a week to get sorted out and i still have to pay the outstanding amount... I said i refused to pay it and the guy said that was up to but it will be reported to ITC

I dont have money to pay that amount and i shouldnt even pay it

R149*24 = R3576. They sure like their bread buttered on all sides.

Remember its R3500 they want now plus the R1096 i already paid....
and i was already more than half way through my contract

Why hassle with all of this? Just fusking create a nominated bank account with R(subs X no. of months remaining). Check your account online at the end if the contract to request cancellation then.

how old is the contract?

don't dick around with call centres, go in and speak to someone face to face

Trust me Vodacom are at least as bad.

Thats why i had to pay in R1096...
I was going to say even R1096 sounded like an unreasonable cancellation fee, but possibly not if you had to pay for the hardware.

If they report you to ITC go after them for that too.

Because they're no longer allowed to gouge you on cancellation.

I always preach that, for me mtn is the very last place I would get a contract. I would actually go for stoneage means of communication before I think mtn

Sent from my BlackBerry

They wanted me to pay a R1000 cancellation fee literally 8 hours before the end of the 24 months for a R29 per month contract at MTN.

sounds about right. I recently got a similar 'type' of response.

The problem with the Consumer Protection Act is that while it states that companies may charge a cancellation fee, it does not state how much - only that it must be "reasonable"

I would say, over 100% of what you would have paid in (R4596 cancellation vs R149*24 = R3576) is hardly reasonable.
