Steam Deck unveiled

So previous gen decent eMMC is the cheapest, vs NVMe.
Price difference $250. I have to wonder if the two devices have different motherboards, or whether the eMMC chip is deactivated for the NVMe versions. Or whether the eMMC chip is installed via a NVMe port.
Also. Since it is a PC I wonder if you could get the cheapest and just install your own NVMe. Since $250 equivalent in our market can get you something like this with room to spare...
Even more if you're buying in the US. They can keep the exclusive bric-a-brac.

I'd love a Steam Deck as I have a large Steam library, but it's definitely too soon to be thinking about getting one just yet I think. I'd rather wait for a few iterations and for the price to normalise, especially when buying from here.

iFixit tears down Steam Deck and will be an authorized supplier of replacement parts

Pre-order for Valve’s Steam Deck will begin arriving to backers’ doorsteps starting February 25. Back when Valve released a teardown video of the Steam Deck, it was promised that replacement parts would be made available as many of the replaceable components.

A new update by Valve confirms that iFixit will be authorized to sell replacement parts for the Steam Deck.

Today we’re announcing that iFixit will be one of the authorized sellers of Steam Deck replacement parts – as well as replacement parts of the Valve Index VR products. We are still hammering out the details and will be sharing more info on this soon.

In addition, iFixit has also released its full teardown of the Steam Deck along with the following X Ray image.

Valve launches Steam Deck, now available to order to reservers

Valve today finally launched its portable Steam Deck console. The device is now available for order to the first batch of reservers, who will be getting an email with ordering details.

Potential buyers who reserved the device will have 72 hours to complete their purchase after receiving the email, or they can cancel their reservation. The next batch of emails will be sent next week.

Valve also released a mini-game called Aperture Desk Job. Set in the Portal universe, the game is designed to walk you through the controls and features of the Steam Deck. However, while it is designed for the Steam Deck, it will also be available to download to anyone with a Windows PC and a controller.

My gaming PC I built in 2012, I only upgraded the GPU in 2015, is still running and playing everything. How likely is it that the Steam deck will still be working and/or playing everything in 10 years time?
I'm keen on getting me one, but reliability, to some extend, is a deal breaker for me.

If it ever gets released in SA it would cost around around 8K.

In ten years time, gaming publishers would have already started to force people onto their cloud ecosystems.

Valve releases Windows 10 drivers for Steam Deck

Valve today announced that it is providing Windows drivers for its Steam Deck handheld console. These drivers will enable crucial hardware compatibility for those who want to use Microsoft's OS.

The drivers being released today are for the GPU, the Wi-Fi, and the Bluetooth. Valve said the audio drivers are still being worked on with AMD, so they are not available today. As such, there will be no audio support through the speakers or headphone jack on the Steam Deck. Users will have to use Bluetooth or USB audio devices.

The drivers are being provided for Windows 10 only. Windows 11 drivers are in the works and will come later with a BIOS update that will enable fTPM support that is mandatory for Windows 11.

The Steam Deck currently does not support dual booting, a feature which will be coming later. Users will hence have to replace the existing SteamOS with Windows 10, and vice-versa if they want to go back.

PS5 launched when the rand was over R18 to the USD
No it launched when the exchange rate is the same as it is now. I mean sure it was R15.45 on the release date, but I'm pretty sure 39c isn't going to make much difference.
