Steam Machine

We didn't get Half-Life 3 but at least we finally got the year of Linux on the desktop

Well, we finally found out that they can, in fact, count to 3

Half life 1 & 2
Half Life 2 Episode 1 & 2
Portal 1 & 2
Left 4 dead 1 & 2
Team fortress 1 & 2
....
Hell, even Counter-Strike skipped 3

We got a "3" out of them, even if it is 3 devices released as once. I'll take it :D

My next console = Bad ass PC + Bazzite

I don't play MP so I don't care about anti-cheat.
I bought the GMKtec K8 Plus beginning of the year from Wootware and slapped Bazzite on it. Basically a Steam PC. Plays everything I throw at it. Also don't do MP games, so that doesn't bother me.

A 2026 PC marketed as 4K/60 with FSR, but it comes with essentially a AMD R5 7500F and cut-down RX7600 with 8Gb VRAM...

Well, here's what the general PC gamer won't tell you -

99% of Steam games are Indie and the overwhelming majority of Steam users use entry level cards.

We just buy the expensive hardware because of unoptimized AAA rubbish and console slop.

Edit: Looking at all those stats, I am above average and I don't even game on PC :D

As a die hard console gamer this has certainly piqued my interest.

Not so much in it's current form being a sort of middle ground performance wise but more so in SteamOS gaining traction.

If Game Pass suddenly shows up on SteamOS and supports all titles that will certainly be a turning point.

Not so sure about that controller, but would need to try it first.

Microsoft are definitely planning something with Gamepass.

3rd party link your steam account to your gamepass account and let the magic happen. Similar to the battle net app linking?

Yeah maybe, but I think the deeper problem would be making everything SteamOS compatible.

Then again I have no idea how complete their library is on SteamOS at present.

My primary issue would be losing decades of games in my Xbox library that I would no longer be able to access and I certainly don't want to pay for again.

Their own hybrid console will likely address that, but if they go completely open and let it work equally well on other hardware that would be magic and would motivate me towards a (hardware) switch.

in a nutshell:
gabe cried about windows
gabe tried his own os - kind worked kinda failed

Now we are still not there due to obvious and various reasons / it's always nice to kak on the side about "another os" until you need to do the work, but don't or cant.

I mean we can says its, and take your pick here, opengl early days all over again.

I guess part of that was also just making it Steamdeck only.

I wonder how different it would be if it was simply fully open-sourced and didn't require a hack to install, I reckon a great many people would be tinkering with it.

I have an old Google Chromebox right here that would make a great SteamOS machine just for playing some older more retro stuff.

You know ~ cry about a gated garden just to create your own gated garden. In the end I think the pattern should have been for example the tried and tested one where ID released doom source.

I’ve tested and played most of the gamepass games on Bazzite which is basically steamOS.

But these where individual games that steam has listed that are on Gamepass as well.

Getting Gamepass ( app ) to work on Linux might not be feasible.

But that means buying them again right?

But Game Pass just linking up licensing with Steam would accomplish the same.

Depends on the price. Reports so far put it probably at around the $800 mark, in which case they're not going to win anything.
I asked one of the AIAIOhs and it agrees.

Estimated Retail Price: $699 for 512GB standalone; $799 for 2TB; +$50-100 for controller bundles.
  • Rationale: BOM is ~$570, leaving room for ~20-30% gross margin ($120-170) to cover shipping, marketing, warranties, and Valve's ecosystem goals (e.g., driving Steam sales). This aligns with analyst predictions ($699-$999) and positions it competitively against PS5 Pro (~$700) or mid-range PCs. Valve historically prices at slight loss initially (like Steam Deck at $399 vs. ~$350 BOM) to build market share, but this higher-spec box suggests profitability from day one.
  • If bundled with the new Steam Controller: Add $50-70 retail (est. BOM $30).
