Steam Machine

Not impressive at all. It's boring in every single way. Looks like it will do well as a server for media streaming.

That's the whole problem, my media PC died or is dying, so I was planning to replace it with a Gmktec or Firebat around R12-17K jobbie. My current Media PC is a 4th-gen i5 with Nvidia 1030, only used for Retrobat, Kodi, Firefox and on odd occasions used for streaming Steam.

This announcement is making me put the brakes on the idea till they announce price/release, cause if it's priced well, I may as well get it for a media PC instead.

Will be a waste of money for a media server.

1. Because of storage limitations.
1. You don’t need performance for streaming media.

What you need is something low powered with 4-6 hard drive slots.

The dedicated 8gb DDR6 will get it over the line quite easily. Steam OS is Vulkan heavy with its shaders so that’s a bonus.

Personally I want a more streamlined Steamdeck with a quality dock like the Switch. That solves gaming on TV for me.

But let's see... The Steam Machine could be tempting, and I'd love for it to catch on and shift more marketshare away from Windows.

Sony Reacts to Steam Machine Price Rumours

I’m still buying a steam machine.

Just as an example:

Marvel cosmic invasion : R569 PlayStation
Marvel cosmic invasion: R290 steam

Sooooo jaaaaaa PlayStation can keep there overpriced games and first party titles.

PS: nothing beats a steam sale! Even the PlayStation 5 Aircon.

MGS Delta and Silent Hill F together are R900 on Steam. Each one is over a grand on PS5. I bought Elden Ring at launch for R650. Hades 2 was R270. Balatro was R145. SilkSong was R180. Sales are actual sales. The list goes on and on. Online is free. Indies are half the price. 3rd party controllers are cheaper. Emulation is also big, and you essentially get a built in Switch, and dozens of other consoles with a PC. If you play a lot of games, consoles just don't make much sense anymore imo, because the cost of software catches up damn fast. Havent touched my PS5 in ages. It's basically just a paperweight till GTA6 comes.

I'm going to wait and see what Microsoft's new console will be like since it looks like it will also run Steam games. If that one is priced like a console then it may be a better buy. But will wait and see.

Next Microsoft console gonna come with Copilot and the option to play your games for you, if the current Microsoft AI push continues.
