Stellenbosch students prevent staff from leaving

I want to disagree with all of you on this matter. Stellenbosch is expensive we all know that, I know that first I studied there.

But that's not the issue, the issue is the higher than inflation price increases year on year. 11.5% come on guys this isn't a rolex or luxury car this has become a basic need for employment today. Why on earth not keep the increases inline with inflation? This is not the first year either

In my opinion the students have a point if the increase is even slightly higher than inflation there needs to be very very good reasons for it. It cannot be allowed or tertiary education will only be in the reach of the very wealthy(and it's bordering on that already) and that's not right.

Not just Stellenbosch all Universities. The method of negotiation that's a debate for another day, but the students have to take a stand if they are not heard.

The reason for the higher than inflation increases is predominantly due to the higher the inflation increases demanded by staff, the higher than inflation cost increases from suppliers, and the lower than inflation increase of the government subsidy... What is the university supposed to do in that situation?

Inflation is not 6% for universities. They have to pay for books which is usually in dollars, a lot of equipment is also in dollars.
Then there is also a decrease in funds provided by government (the 3% increase don't even correlate with the government's 6% inflation).

The entitled brats from Open Stellenbosch who are definately not poor, and live in the brand new university subsided residences are going to be arrested at 11:37 if they don't leave.

I can't wait :D

Good, these little shytes need to learn that their are consequences to taking a protest too far.

shampies. Let them cry over a criminal record.

Stop being soft on these criminals.

Then the tuition fee must be separate and in line with inflation. Everything else must be stipulated and charged separately. A breakdown of percentages must be thoroughly scrutinised by a competent party/body/government.

Education cannot become another rich only toy. It's immoral and the problems in this country will never be fixed if it is allowed to happen

What? How can it be separate and inline with general inflation when the cost to the university is not?

No what i'm saying is that tuition must be in line. Any other costs can be higher or lower but a breakdown must be provided and scrutinised heavily.

Tuition is not the only thing to make up an education. The lecturer on their own is not the entire education. There are books, premises (electricity/water/rates) and many other increases. What would the point in a break-down be if the course cannot be offered without the rest of it?

Tell that to the guy working on your car next time you get a R10000 bill without any details.
This same thing has happened in other countries as well.

What you're effectively asking for though is a complete line item breakdown to be passed through to the student for all associated costs incurred in providing that course... that is just not even vaguely feasible.

This is the reason for the increase:

The number of students has doubled while government subsidies have not kept pace. It's not about the universities somehow deciding to be elitist, or making money. The money can only come from three sources: fees, donors and government (public funds). When one of those sources does not keep pace with students numbers the result is obvious.

No not a complete line item breakdown just tuition and the rest. If you can break up that rest a little more that would be great obviously the level at which you can break that down will have to be feasible.

If a University cannot separate the tuition expense from the rest then they don't do their books at all. They already break down their costs in their accounting system btw. Feasible it is indeed.

The tuition fee fills the gap between expenditure and other incomes (e.g. subsidies). You can't pin the tuition fee to inflation and then hope that everything else will fall in line.

The increase is the symptom, not the cause.

Therefore, unless you feel that the University is mismanaging the money (which not even the protesters have claimed), then your anger should be directed at the cause. In this case, apparently the national government.

Not to mention all those student loans from drop-outs and others that haven't been paid back.
