Which is something the students should take into account when they take their stand.
I'm not defending the students and their methods i'm defending their cause.

Not to mention the government wanting more and more disadvantages students added to the pool for virtually free, but without adding additional funding.

So of course there will be increases.


They should just shut their doors and re-open as fully private. Then everyone from government can **** right off and so can the protesters.

You either pay, or you don't go to school. It's as simple as that.

Absolutely if they did that then I would not support the student's cause, fact is it's not fully private.

Where did you get that graph from? Would be interested to read the article it comes from.

If it were fully private near no one would be able to afford it. A large portion of the fees (between 50% and 75%) of most universities comes from government funding.
 
Police forcibly remove protesting students at Maties

CAPE TOWN - Protesting students at Stellenbosch University have been forcibly removed from the admin building.

Students have been occupying the building since yesterday in protest against a proposed 11.5 percent fee hike for 2016.

The university obtained a court interdict demanding they vacate the building or be arrested.

Emotions are running high at the university this afternoon as police have successfully managed to remove the students from the building.

However, no arrests have been made.

Several students can be seen wiping away tears, relieved they’ve not been arrested.

They’re now continuing to sing struggle songs on the steps of the building, while police remain inside.

Earlier, police gained entry into the building where defiant students insisted on being arrested.

The university obtained a court order calling on the students to vacate the building.

The students were given 30 minutes to vacate the building, in accordance with a court order. But the students were adamant they are prepared to go to jail as part of their struggle against fee hikes.

Stellenbosch University’s Martin Viljoen says police are monitoring the situation.

Kyk ek gee nie om dat hul wil staak nie maar moenie die studente belemmer wat wil gaan leer nie. In die geval moet die mense wat my wil keer maar die punch vat want ve hul sal ek nie stop nie. Hulle moan die universiteit se geld is te veel dan wil hul staak en goed afbreek en afbrand die geld waaroor hulle moan gaan daarvoor.

Die logika daar agter die barbare verstom my.

Clearly not. It appears that demonstrating and demanding is etched into the South African psyche.
 
Stellenbosch academics call for end to interdict

Cape Town - A group of concerned academics at Stellenbosch University have called on the institution to drop an interdict against protesting students.

Students were addressed by the staff on Thursday.

According to a statement read out after a meeting between staff and #Stelliesmustfall, the group said they had resolved that university management must withdraw its interdict, which has been in place for two days.

"Without the removal of the interdict, there can be no peaceful resolution. In the current climate, it is impossible for students to study," staff member Ronel Carollisen read.

Meanwhile, the Council of Churches in Stellenbosch has also pledged their support for the students.

A representative told students: "We want to stand in solidarity with you against the financial constraints which stand in the way of academic opportunities.

"We commend your discipline - it shows courage."

Students in turn responded with cheers of "hallelujah" and "amen".

Students nationwide are protesting proposed fee hikes for 2016.

Stellenbosh University apologises to students, lifts interdict

Cape Town - Stellenbosch University has apologised to students for the "trauma" caused when action was taken against them to remove them from the institution.

It also said it would immediately apply to have the interdict against the students lifted.

In a statement, the university said the interdict was obtained earlier this week to have students removed from the Administration Building at the university.

"Rector and Vice Chancellor Wim de Villiers addressed a large group of protesting students near the Arts Building in Merriman Street in Stellenbosch and said that the interdict is lifted in light of the peaceful protests on the university's campuses.

"He apologised to the students for the trauma caused when action was taken against [them]..."

De Villiers told students he supported their demand for a 0% increase and that management would discuss the impact of the announcement by President Jacob Zuma.

Zuma announced on Friday afternoon that there would be no increase in student fees for 2016.

This came after nationwide student protests against proposed fee hikes.
