Ster-Kinekor drive-ins forced to close in lockdown level 4

Ster-Kinekor has appealed to the South African government to allow it to reopen its theatres.

The cinema chain told MyBroadband that even its drive-ins had to close when South Africa moved to lockdown alert level 4 last week.

This will have a devastating impact on the company, which is already in business rescue, a spokesperson for Ster-Kinekor stated.

"As an industry, we employ thousands of people and create employment for thousands of others in related industries," the company said.

this is what happens when a incompetent government is in charge, businesses suffer,
what about the booze producers, suffering,
cinemas, suffering
malls and take away suffering.
and now they want to get us to pay TV licenses for computers and mobile devices, to feed their fat incompetent behinds.

might as well close shop and do nothing, just like the ANC did during the initial lockdown.

I don't see why i have to drive so far to only to watch old movies....

From modern classics to new releases, and everything in between, you can look forward to the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody, The Greatest Showman, Godzilla vs Kong and so much more.

Tickets range from R200 per car, and can be booked through quicket.co.za.......

The comfort of your own home with ur own snacks and downloading the latest movies...no tnx

Dont blame gov for SK, they've been on a steady decline before covid, and since more blockbusters are going the streaming route there's even less interest.

Cinemas have been struggling for years. Ster Kinekor was only surviving by price gouging on their concessionary items.
Yes the pandemic accelerated their demise, but the writing has been on the wall (or screen) for a long time now.

True, the last time that I went to the cinema was about ten years ago.

I suspect he is talking in a local context, I used to go to the cinema regularly and the last few years you can see it's less popular.
I am talking in a local context, but it is also a worldwide trend.

I don't see why you can't be allowed to at-least enjoy a drive-in movie. Stupid
Curfew might make it difficult to get more than one show in per evening and it's going to take a lot more than that to save the industry from their own greed pricing.
