So he wants to government to buy Sun which instead of just "locking you into it's format" locks you into it's hardware too.
What a nub.

Open source is a good idea in theory but from what I have seen in practice it is anything but easy, nor more productive.
A customer of mine has 2 notebooks, 2 years old, but apparently no screen drivers exist which would enable us to use them as terminals running a windows program under wine (in a similar way to terminal services).
On the work stations where it works, the loading of the programs is at least 10 times slower, although once loaded the speed is comparable to running it under windows.

they won't use something that they can not control and make money out of.

"...adopting open source will ultimately make Government departments more productive"

I would like to know how? You can have the most free products deployed in gov depts, but it still comes down to the skill that the gov people have or lack.

I like the idea of open source, and with the combination of a good Linux distro (Ubuntu) and Sun's open office one can rest easily one have all the ISO standards covered what office use is concerned (and no, .doc and docx is not an ISO standard its Microsoft attempt to try and force u to use their incompetent office suite) ..But what I learned while in the IT industry is that Paper pusher's dont like change, they like their start menu, they like their my computer icon and office assistant, so the change is never a pain free one for any IT department.

Open source is the dumbest most expensive idea i have ever heard of in goverment....This is a fact

Been running solely on open-source for a long time now. My computer actually runs faster on "open-source" than it does on crappy Windows. 10-15% faster to be exact...

I'm confident that most of time spent on open source, is to compete with your time invested in IT tweaking rather than the true business mission critical objective.

Open source + effective hourly investment = unprofitable business model

unprofitable unproductive goverment model = high consultant rates + lazy gov employees - MS Outlook + TV + cowboy tactics + Super micro management + highschool teachers = EPIC FAIL

Show me the proof, or otherwise is it just a opinion and by the looks of it a very biased opinion.

Oh really, well I think I will just go knock on Googles' door and tell them they have a unprofitable business model, Yahoo as well. I do know they don't sell Open Source Solutions but they do use it internally.

You are only spreading FUD and once again it is biased.

I do believe the problem lies with the "unproductive goverment model"(Nothing personal but it is spelled government, I know I'm the last one to talk about spelling or grammar but at least I spell check my post with the build in spell checker supplied with Firefox. Try it it will do wonders for your posts)

Also can you tell me how much they are paying for IT consulting at the moment, so that we can compare it to the market and see if it is really higher?

All the other points are once again opinions, with no facts linked to it.

Regards,

Ps. Why did you add the "+HighSchool teachers"? To my knowledge a High School teacher must have a 3 year Degree and 1 year Diploma. I also know of teachers with their Honours and Master Degrees. Can you maybe supply me with your qualifications? (Sorry this last point is a bit personal :o )

1-give me a government department Except SARS, that actually works in focussing on the public interest rather than internal production of expensive tools? It’s not biased as I represent a government strategic post and KNOW for a FACT that open source is a political agenda and not focussed on effective production. For example are you going to tell someone in need of government assistance to wait for open source development or support?
2-Google is an innovation hub on new research and development, they do not have IT guys and development teams tweaking non-profitable products with no-consequence. Who is yahoo? Marketing business models does not suggest open source. Remember the value of the presence.
3-My only bias is towards focussing on a platform or foundation that encourage production and NOT political or economic agenda.
4-Spelling: DUDE, focus on the value of your input rather than being anal about “non-consequential” confrontation. This is a typical approach of bias on difference of opinion rather than the global understanding and enablement. I enjoy your enthusiasm towards open source, but note the end objective of open source. To enable you to grow with competition not to hinder you from actual effective collaboration.
5-One thing is a fact getting a consultant for open source is seriously expensive as it is a controversial approach that needs to be justified and business viable.
6-what is a fact? Seems like you are pitching for a second opinion.
7-I have the utmost respect for teachers in any form, I do not however respect a draconian micro management approach to destroy any free thinking. Secondly, in context, an honours or masters degree does not train you to apply effective knowledge but just enables you see the most effective approach for applying your knowledge.
8-Regarding my tertiary path, I don’t need a dick measuring content to justify my argument. I’m passionate about the destructive impact on the ground that actually negatively impacts our nation on the ground.

Thanks for the apologies and non-personal questions however I would rather indulged them on common ground rather than using them to justify your case. :)

You are just a Scrooge bastard, with unethical business practices like Microsoft, go spread your FUD some where else!

I recently added a new stick of RAM to a friend's computer. Windows died. Eventually I spent 20 minutes and loaded Linux on there, which worked first time, so that they at least have a working PC until I can spend a weekend installing Windows again.

Um... I'd have to say that Linux works better than Windows, and I have plenty of practical experience to back up that statement... Open source FTW

With Linux I have too many problems with drivers and programs. Not so with windows
