When this happens are you able to visit www.cellc.co.za?The E1820 remains connected, but every now and then (maybe 5 or 6 times per day) there is zero throughput.
Disconnecting and reconnecting immediately solves the problem.

I am also having the same problem so you folks are not alone at all.
This has something to do with DATA bundle/free data out of synch or something, I am sure if you do have airtime available on your account your airtime will be depleted in no time...
Just had this again now.
@RichardG, and a few others: When you say, "see if i get d/c again".. does your modem actually disconnect (by itself) and drop the connection, or does it stay connected but unable to browse any websites except for the Cell C one (like the thread title says), until YOU disconnect and reconnect it?
Just wanted to point out that it sounds like there might be two completely different problems being discussed here. Or maybe it's just me.
did you manage to check your RSSI - when it happened.
Stable Connection here - will have to leave my connection idle and see if i get d/c again
Signal strength has nothing to do with it. I am still connected but can only access www.cellc.co.za. As others mentioned Skype still works (for some odd reason). But I cannot access any sites, can't collect IMAP mail etc.
The only thing that fixes it is to disconnect and reconnect.
And again this morning when I woke up I could only access Cell C (my connection is on 24/7).
My best guess is that something in the Cell C backend system believes your bundle is depleted or is no longer able to track your data usage, so it places you in the "walled garden" until such time as you disconnect / reconnect where thing are then back in sync. Those of you who have killed your cap would have noticed that you can connect, but only access Cell C. This is handled by the backend system so I am sure that's where the problem is.
