i'm on Howick Rd, Pietermaritzburg exchange and experiencing terrible latency since 2 days ago. Browsing and gaming is terribly slow. Telkom claim my speed is perfect.
Also using Lan Cable not wireless.

You must stress that you are NOT complaining about speed but about latency.

Do not let them palm you off and insist on a fault ref number.

Also ask them to repeat what they have typed into the online fault system and make sure it is what you said, viz. high latency is causing problem when you are gaming and browsing.

thanks i'll try make sure i get fault ref number for latency issues

does latency cause my speedtests to say my speed is very low?

Just found out its my exchange after several calls got nice friendly Lady with a clue
Exchange fault number is 57ANK240710
Personal Fault Number is 565CNK260710

Not sure if this helps you Moggie. Is there anyway to speed up the process of them fixing this?

Yeah Im also in PMB and Im getting effected x-x I cant do my job (work for a vps company based in the usa) Getting pings spiking all over the place. It gets so bad I even get request timeouts so it makes it hard for me to do my work with a constant laggy speed.

would be good if you also reported (if you havent) to make them fix it faster

more people the better :)

Once an exchange fault is recorded the process is accelerated as it reflects very poorly on the maintenance team and impacts their performance assessment. They cannot sweep it under the mat (like some guys that close personal refs). They are most probably waiting for a maintenance spare to arrive. Normally they have hot-pluggable spares on site, so I can imagine that it is a major component that they have to order from Boksburg store...

Eeee x-x Cant get through to them yet. Just waiting and waiting x-x will try a lil later =\

yeah, I also live in PMB Howick road. And yes, since the weekend, latencies have been terrible, but I've noticed that late at night and early in the mornings that they are normal (below 50ms on 384kb line), but during the day they are 250ms+ if I'm lucky.

I'm gona let them know that I want them to sort out the problem at the exchange seeing as the problem is only during the day hours. Can't imagine that the problem would then be on my side.

It's a problem with the PMB exchange, or perhaps one of the cards. I live in Howick (the Howick exchange connects to the PMB exchange before going national) and have been experiencing terrible speeds since 1 June. Over the last fews days it has dropped to around 0.3/0.4 and 200ms+ pings on ALL networks (I've got a 4Mbit line and used to get 3.7Mbit + 35ms ping to JHB). I finally got the ticket handed over to the data techs in PMB who are investigating.

I think the main thing here is that everyone experiencing this issue must log a fault so that Telkom can realise it's a widespread problem in the area.

have any of you guys noticed your internet light go off sometimes or is it just me happened more often recently with this problem?

ok, so my speeds havn'et been affected at all, but my pings were terrible, luckily telkom called back and said that everything seems to be fine on their side and that sending a guy out would just result in me paying a useless bill (as if they wouldn't like that). So I checked whether my pings have improved and sue enough they did.

My internet is back to normal. Merenwenrago could u please post whether they've fixed ur problem? Would like to know if they did come and fix something at the exchange, resulting in things also being fixed for me.

seems fixed partially fixed here also but still optimistic it will last :P

my in game latency has spikes still but not as bad

seems i'm lacking upload speed causing my latency to be higher so not fixed properly (my game uses uploading)

My line came right at about 1:30PM. I was told by some Telkom techs that there's a problematic "thing" (can't remember what they called it) that was being worked on and that was causing problems in and out on PMB. Supposedly it will be totally fixed by tomorrow afternoon. Let's hope it doesn't go to hell on Friday again :P

seems its bad again today not as bad latency but still double normal latency to telkom.co.za
