I know this has been covered before on this forum but I feel it might need to be revisited.

My 24 month MY2gig data bundle contract has just expired yet in the 25th month I'm still being billed R449-00.

On querying this with my service provider, Nashua mobile, I'm told that the modem is free and the R60 premium I'm paying (My2gig month-to-month R389 vs My2gig with "FREE MODEM" R449-99) is not a hardware subsidy.

So why the hell am I paying R60 extra per month if not a hardware subsidy?

We conferenced call with the Vodacom call center to pose the question to them and the results were embarrassing to say the least ,with the operator unable to offer any clarity on the situation.

Feroz at Nashua is now trying to get someone at the executive helpdesk to assist...

As far as I understand it I should be paying R389 per month from this month forth or until I decide to take another modem/router...

Correct me if I am wrong...

Cancel the contract and go prepaid or modemless contract with Vodacom directly (VodacomSP at any Vodashop).

You right, it makes no sense. Thats the reason I moved to a top up 400 after my 24 months & got a free B970 router (+R1000 voucher)
So save R50 a month & get a free phone/router

It is interesting that as soon as it is hinted that regulations will apply, the whole thing gets tied up in legal challenges - sometimes for years
Meanwhile, the only ones benefitting are the telcos / cellular providers and their lawyers!

I personally prefer pay as you go. Got SIMs for all three providers - choose the one offering the best deal at any given point. Really don't see why I must continue to pay for something that has already been paid for!!!

BTW a similar scam operates in the car insurance industry. Your annual premiums either remain the same or increase, while the value of your car depreciates. The onus is on YOU to renegotiate with your broker - not the other way round!

I think the contract needs to be very specific that x amount is for data and y is for hardware, specifically when the cost of that hardware is being covered over a 24 month period.

It's the same with cell phones. These days one can choose to pay for the phone in full up front or have the cost of the phone subsidized on a monthly basis for the 24 month term of the contract but once the 24 months is up that surely that subsidy falls away?

I here you on the car insurance but what these guys are now saying is although your car has depreciated the cost to repair it should you be in an accident has increased significantly with the increase in the cost of spares etc etc

They always have an excuse why they cannot LOWER prices. The same with telcoms costs. Just look at the number of articles posted by RPM re telcom costs. If you can't simply explain things, just baffle them with bull#$%!.

Complain to ICASA.
Apparently they think that they can do something about this and are spending R7.3 million of your money on helping you.

I apologise.

I went through the same thing a few months back - only I noticed it only after a couple of months that they did not reduce my monthly bill as I expected. I never checked my bill trusting that they would do the "right thing" - boy was I wrong.

To make a long story short, you have two options:
1) Cancel your contract and get an additional Data Sim card for you normal cell phone contract. Then add the MyGig2 onto that contract.
2) Migrate the data contract to a 4U Contract. Then add the MyGig2 onto that.

I cannot say for sure if any of this will actually work because
1) I could never find anyone from Vodacom that sounded like they know what they are talking about, and
2) In the end I canceled everything and went ADSL - could not be happier.

First mistake was getting a contract in the first place.

I get so upset when I discover a friend or a family member who has been conned by Vodacom or the like into a 24 month contract paying R300 odd rand a month for 500mb and a huawei modem. Makes my skin crawl! Not to mention the shock they get when they go over their 500mb and end up with a bill running into the thousands of rands.

My advice to anyone who asks for it is always to buy a modem outright off the Gumtree and to go the prepaid route.

Contract 3G is the biggest scam going at the moment and it catches people who don't know any better.
