I wouldn't mind paying a licence fee to watch TV on my phone, but then I want to be able to watch all channels without having to pay for the data or for each episode or however they charge.

They cannot let us pay per view and have to pay for a licence.

I see you are one of those poor people with the jasjar...

dunno what they were thinking when they upped the ROM to 128m and downed the ram to 64m on those units... have you noticed how you need to shutdown apps or reset to run skype on it...

My muuuuch older imate had 128m RAM and ran anything I threw at it, multitasking nicely - although the 3G and WIFI is a nice addition to the jasjar... pity about the ram!

Bird says that if people get fed up with the service they are receiving from the SABC, they could eventually turn to broadband Internet video services instead. The SABC could lose licence fee revenue as people started switching to TV over broadband. It could even lose advertising revenue as its audience found other ways of being entertained.

Just give the governemnt another reason to hold back telecoms for another decade... not very responsible reporting imo. ;-)
 
They should make people pay for a tv license on their cellphone in case there is a tsunami.

Exactly! I have always thought this... what's their problem? They have no sense at all. One often just has to watch the shows aimed at 5-8 year olds and have to put up with the condom ads in between to realise that someone isn't thinking straight.
 
I never understood why we have to pay for a sabc when etv does it for free, sabc is meant to serve ALL people of SA(rich/poor) etc yet when they want to upgrade e.g. they ask for money from the gov. So are public, state owned, independant or what ? seems to me they playing the field and getting money from all, guess gov will say its incase of a tsunami again :rolleyes:
 
Had a call from them just yesterday.
I see no reason why we should pay for cr@p.
I pay multichoice for so so programing, I never ever watch SABC so why should I give them any money? They get money already from the Government and advertising.
If cellphone companies start to ad this to their contracts the answer is simple, go prepaid or switch cell companies.

According to those figures there are only around 2 million people paying for a license??

Even if you use your set only to watch videos, it is capable of receiving a signal, so you have to have a license for it. Since the license is not a service contract between the SABC and the viewer, the nature or acceptability of programmes, or the number of channels you can receive, is not at issue. Although TV license fees are used to fund the national public service broadcaster and are administered by the SABC, the license is not an SABC license per se, but a government imposed levy for access to the air-waves. Like income tax and car licenses, it is a legal liability.

The Broadcasting Act, another outdated law that is long overdue for a revamp, like the telecommunications act.
Strewth I can remember when the post office drones used to drive around in their cute little white vans trying to track signals from people using CB radios.
If Government can pump through legislation like the 'Floor crossing' in record time (cause it suites them) there is no excuse why we are still sitting with restrictive and archaic legislation in more important areas that are hampering our economic growth.

I think what Voda are implying (after a big spliff brainstorming) is that they will have something in their contract that will ask you if you have a license or not, if you do provide the number perhaps and all is fine, if you dont sign here please to get one and pay.
Like when you go an buy a TV today from any major store, you have to produce your ID and your TV license or else they cannot sell it to you.
 
The history of a TV license ... like a road license, it is for the upkeep and maintainaince of the transmitters and paying for news reports, weather, entertainment et al.

If I am not using the SABC infrastructure, why should I pay a TV license? You dont need a drivers license or a car license if you dont drive on public roads. I dont need a TV license for a Satellite decoder, why should I need it for a phone!

I think its another way the ICASA/SABC wanna milk all the cash from a new technology.

/Me thinks SABC/Sentech is feeling threatned that their 30year old technology is about to be ass-whipped by a cell-phone.
 
In all their ads they say if you own a TV then you "must pay your TV licence". Nice of them to let me know that my thinking was "warped" (again) and that my cellphone and pc is in fact a "TV set". hahahaha. lol

Anyways, if Vodacom or MTN or whoever wants to transmit a program via broadband then they have to purchase the right to do so from the copyright owner, am I right? You pay for the content to make up for this purchase. Now suddenly the SABC should get a share of that because the poor thing wasn't the one to show you the program. How pathetic is that?

The SABC is just another telkom imo. Time to go the way of the states with no license at all. Let them survive on advertising money in order to "pay" for all the repeats or crappy local garbage.

I don't have a problem with my Jasjar. It works perfectly for me. Don't need to shut down apps all the time. If you have SPB Pocket Plus installed it shuts down programs automatically when you close it. What memory is concerned, I have no problem with resetting it all the time.

I wouldn't swop my Jasjar for any other phone/pda on the market.
