Don't tell this to the DoC as they will use this as an excuse to legislate the crap out of this technology making it virtually impossible to develop economical services for in order to protect the SABC. You never know with our DoC.
 
Another interesting tidbit is that you are supposed to pay for every "device" you have that is capable of receiving a TV signal, but now this is where it gets very difficult, for example a computer streaming TV off of the internet, is that considered a TV signal still? How is that possible since it is not using the broadcasting systems that the SABC (or anyone else for that matter) use. If you have 3 TV's you have to pay for 3 licenses, what if I have one PC with one TV tuner card that broadcasts that signal over a wireless or LAN network to 2 other terminals, would that be one license or still 3?

Frankly the whole TV licensing scheme is about as archaic as our broadcasting technology.
 
Apart from the propaganda pushers who needs a state broadcaster anyway? Privatize SABC (after making allowances for national tsunami-like emergencies), open up the airwaves and let the broadcasters pay the cost of the licensing.

I would like to know how much of this "govenment licence" goes to e-tv? Its like buying bread at Spar and paying a "Shopping licence" to Pick 'n Pay.

Afaik e-tv doesn't get any of it since they are a commercial station. If they can survive without it then so can the SABC. It's all about greed you see.

Last I heard Etv runs at a massive loss - they barely keep going.

Bring down license fees, bring down the SABC. Yippee, another example of how companies in SA can't seem to function without monopoly protection. :D
 
There again who needs or wants the SABC.... I am sure someone else can do the job without going through this monopoly PAY PAY and PAY BS

There again the SABC and Telkom do make a beautiful couple

Did they say right or white?

One day you'll need a license to cross the street. But how will you get it as you will need one first before you'll be able to go get one? Certainly not over the internet because that will be too bloody expensive at R100/bytes the way things seem to be heading. :eek:

Television programs and movies are not free, and the costs have been escalating as the producers of the material get greedier.

eTV is even more saturated with advertising.
 
If they're only getting $500 million from licenses, then they should scrap the license. A tiny increase in annual tax would fully cover the license fees. Then you know everyone has paid and you can scrap all the administration, inspectors etc.
