I want to upgrade a bit.

Should I go
a) Intel motherboard Intel CPU or
b) Gigabyte mobo Intel CPU
c) AMD
 
I had great reliability from my intel mobo... not so great from my AMD one...
 
a) What do you plan to do with the system?
b) Is heat and power consumption important to you?
c) Is cost an issue?
 
a)serieses and games (eg crysis, COH2)
b)screw eskom
c)cheap, but not cheapskate
 
Gigabyte is the way to go. It also does depend on the specs you require for the mb though (ram slots, speed, sata ports, fsb, yada yada)
 
I heard the intel one doesn't OC. I'd go Gigabyte/Asus. There is no reason to buy AMD at the moment imo.
 
Intel beats AMD with its hand and legs cut off. So go Gigabyte, (or other similar superior brand)
 
If you go Intel there are many good boards out there. If you're going gigabyte look to the DS3/DS4 range the price isn't so crazy like DS5 and DQ6 series. There are other good brands as well like foxconn.

I think I will go for the gigabyte mobo.

Now my next questions are.

What's the difference between?
a) Intel Dual Core 2.2Ghz
b) Intel Core2 Duo 2.2Ghz

And if the mobo specs say 1333FSB, must I get a 1333Mhz CPU or can I settle for the cheaper 800Mhz Mhz CPU?

Sorry for the 20 questions. I know i can google it, but it's easier to post here.
And it's better to see different opinions.

The difference between the Dual Core and the Core 2 Duo is that C2D is the next generation version of the DC. Thus it is also a lot faster and more efficient in both power consumption and performance, yada yada (ie it is a lot better)

The MB will specifiy your maximum limits for RAM, CPU, HDD, etc. In your case, your MB has a FSB (Front Side Bus) of 1333MHz (It will be able to take Core 2 Duo Core 2 Quad, not sure about Dual Core, it might say so in the MB specifications). So you can use a 800,1066 or 133FSB CPU. The 800MHz CPU will be a lot cheaper, but the 1333MHz CPU will be ~66% faster than the 800MHz CPU (Give or take). Also then you are able to go for faster than 800MHz RAM, as your computer is only as fast as your slowest component. So if you do go for the 800CPU, rather buy 800RAM (definitely not 667 as your pc will then run at 667FSB). If however, you go for the 1333MHz CPU, you can look at the 800,1066,1333 RAM. The faster the more expensive, but the better in the long run.

Now I just need some tips on how to convince my wife why I need a better PC.
 
Just tell her that your pc isn't fast enough for your work requirements and that you stand a risk of getting high blood pressure due to the programs taking too long. It's not hard to figure out an excuse to why you want something. If you want it bad enough, that is.
