I've just moved into a new apartment and have to get a stove, seeing that I know absolutely nothing about stoves maybe my fellow forumites can help.

I'm looking at a free standing gas/electric stove and have found a kelvinator gas stove, electric oven

http://www.kelvinator.co.za/viewProduct.php?PID=54

It's going for R5500...what do you think? Of the kelvinator name if you have one please give your opinion on it?

Be sure to check whether the stove can be wired onto a normal household plug or whether it needs its own dedicated feed. I suspect that stove might need its own dedicated feed.

Also the gas installation has to be done by an accredited installer. The bottle has to be outside and there have to be shut off valves. Stupid when you consider how a gas heater works.

I think he should be OK of he used 9KG or lighter for the supply.

Previous owner had a full on gas stove, gonna put a 9kg bottle outside, and stove needs iwn dedicated power already existing one there needs and electrician to install. So far nothing has been said about kelvinator assume it's dependable??

Much thanks for replies!

Curious, surely a installed stove forms part of the building structure (same as a DStv Dish/Antenna) and therefore should have been left there as part of you purchasing the apartment?

Not in Cape Town :wtf:

Re Kelvinator, I have never had a problem with the Kelvinator, our previous hob was one. Seems like an ok brand.

Have you looked at Defy? When I was looking for spares for my Kelvinator stove I was told that they were no longer in business but clearly they are! From my experience Defy has a good support system for providing spare parts etc. My Kelvinator stove which I inherited from the previous owner has never worked reliably. You will probably need to purchase replacement elements and thermostats etc. after a few years of use so you need to buy a reputable brand.

Gas bottle has to be outside, even if its 9kg.

Kelvinator is fine, no problem. You've made the right decision to go Gas/electric combo, gas ovens are crap (bake etc).

its also wallet breaking..

you would go thru a 45kg bottle of gas nearly every WEEK
