Hi guys..
I have a very weird problem and ran out of ideas on how to fix it..

I have a 384k adsl line, Mweb ISP. Connecting using a Vox router. Now here is the problem, I can only browse sites using IP's.. Can't use url names.. And this is on all the pc's, 3x laptops, 2x pc's. Ip's gets assigned by dhcp. If i add the mweb dns statically to all the pc's the internet works fine. Also if i dailup from the pc's the internet works fine as well. So yes so far it sounds like the router is at fault but here is the twist, I change the vox connection from mweb account to axxess account and everything works without any problems.

Mweb has reset my account, telkom has reset my line. Mweb checked on there side if my account was not restricted or anything and found nothing. Dns servers works fine according to them.

I haven't found or got someone to borrow me a adsl router to test with so im stuck there. Still looking.. Im getting frustrated now.. :(

Any ideas for what else i can try?

Hi D@rk_4ngel, yes very strange.

The mechanics of how the DNS server addresses get assigned to the router via ADSL PPPoE should be identical whether using a MWEB or other SAIX based ADSL account. I can only think something in the router's configuration is stopping proper access to the MWEB DNS servers e.g. preferential static DNS server settings, static routes or access filters.

May I suggest that you try reseting the router to factory defaults (1st noting down all pertinent info) and then configuring the MWEB ADSL connection. If this bare config works, then re-add other settings e.g. security, VoIP etc.

Should this fail, please PM me and I will investigate & escalate.

What OS are you running? Windows XP?

I had the exact problem you had! I was running windows xp service pack 3.
I though it was my router and destroyed it cause it was a cheapy. But when I bought a netgear I had the same problem.

Only after I formated completyly it worked with windows vista. Now I think it might be a virus or something not too sure. Just an idea.

If you go start > Run > type in cmd and enter at the prompt type ipconfig /all

does is say what the dns servers are?

from what im used to setting up at the ISP side, each user ussually gets assigned DNS servers to their account/username on the ISP LDAP. if this is not done by the ISP you will have the problem you are currently experiencing.

they do this so they get an even distrobution of DNS use from their users, and dont sit with overloaded servers and users complaining about slow browser response.

ask your ISP to make sure your username has DNS assigned to it.

Hi Guys.. Got it working agian.. SOLVED!
Ok.. I did a reset on the Vox router. Called vox and explained what is going on and this is what i had to do..

My isp is Mweb, their DNS is 196.43.42.190. The vox tech asked me to connect with a Datapro account which uses the same DNS, guess what happend when i tried to go to google.com, IT WORKED!!!.. So i quickly disconnected, entered my isp details (the mweb account) and connected, ITSA WORKING!! hehe YEAY!

Seems like a little problem with the vox router there.. Well, will see how long this wil last before something like this happens again.. :)
