Strange Call Pretending to be Microsoft Support Agent

I just had a call from a very abusive Alien Computer Indian sounding man, who wanted to speak to the owner of the house. It took 3 attempted for my to understand what company he was calling from - which I finally found out was ET Protection.

Then he told me he was phoning about the Microsoft Windows Computer that I was using. And when I said what Microsoft Windows Computer, he asked me if I had a brain. WTF? And he said it again. So I said I don't have a Microsoft Windows Computer (because I honestly don't) - so he said it again and slammed the phone down on me.

What a totally bizarre experience...

I'm not sure what he wanted. It's totally suspicious, so be warned!
 
Yep, the Scammers are really going at it!

Got several friends who have been called by these criminals!
 
Got the call, kept the lady on the line for about 30min (new personal record I must add :D )...

Completely took the wind out of her sails when I told her I use linux... :whistle:
 
Also know people that have been called by them, they seem to have a huge call list and have been targeting South Africa for long, they certainly are catching a few people to keep this scam running for so long, they must be getting an epic phone bill at the end of the month.
 
They phoned my sister a few weeks ago at home, luckily I've taught her enough to realise it was a scam.

Wish I was there to answer :D
 
Ironically I was just reading this thread this morning and guess who called my land line about 10 minutes ago. Someone from "CT Protections", a lady with a thick Indian accent. When I asked where she was based she said the US, I asked where she got my details from and she said they have the registration ID of my windows computer... so I asked what it was, and she said please go to your windows computer and switch it on.. so I said I only have a mac, and the phone got put down.

Caller ID came up as "000 201 849 891"
 
I also got the call today

I got a call from an Indian sounding lady on my landline. Said the same thing about Microsoft. wanted to knoe which operating system I was using. I went along with what she was asking but alarm bells were ringing in my head. I asked where she was. she said Cape Town. I pointed out that my caller ID shows the call is international. She said the company is international and the call origninates in USA. (It actually came from UK - 00442104587232) She cound still be in India or anywhere else for that matter.

I told the lady that I had a good antivirus to protect my PC. She said no antivirus can pick up this internet threat. I need their help under microsoft's instruction.

Under her instructions I went to My Computer then Computer Management, Event viewer, Applications. she asked me if there were any yellow warning triangles in the list. There were 19 warnings. Up to now her speach had been what one would expect from an IT technician. When i told her of the 19 warnings her speach changed to non-technicial. "O my God this is terrible. I must put you straight through to our technicial department "

I said I needed conformation before anything further could happen. She said her web site was www.etprotections.com but that I urgently needed their help or I would loose everything on my PC.

I would NOT advise you to access the web site, but you can Google it as I did and got to this forum.
I assume they want to infect PC to use as slaves.
You might like to call the number that called me or get someone in UK to see who owns that number.
 
Where are they finding the phone numbers?

I got the call today. If the leak is outside South Africa I would suspect Notron Support. They use landline numbers as one proof of ID on support calls for Norton 360. Do others who got these scam calls also use Norton 360. I like Norton's 24/7 support. It is great and this would be totally against Norton's policy, but it only takes one unhappy person to sell data out the back door. Any other Ideas?
 
Same thing with us. They called my wife the other day and somehow knew she was on her PC and was on the net. Indian accent claimed to be from Microsoft support and made her look at a bunch of back-end settings. They then tried to get her to go to a specific web address after which she told them to get lost and said I would deal with it when I got home as I work in the IT field.

Almost certain that these guys website downloads some sort of malware to your PC. I would love to know where they got my landline number from though.

Just remember folks, MS support never ever calls anyone, you are lucky to reach them if you call them.
 
I got a call from a female Asian a while back. There was about 1.5 seconds delay so I knew something was amiss.

I let her talk a while but I knew it was a scam. When I told her she can't possibly know what's happening on my Microsoft PC because I have Linux she hung up :D

Even when you log calls... I have a 1 week old ticket RE Exchange, still no call back. I have since fixed my problem thanks to Google but would love to know when and if they will ever phone me back. :)

Why don't you guys try and record the conversations ;( I would LOVE to hear the soul destroying disappointment in their voices after a half hour call where you finally inform them that you are using Linux/Apple.

They phoned me on Friday with all sorts of jargon but sounded so genuine I believe them and even gave them my bank details but because I still had to transfer money into the account I asked them to phone back today - I googled them and came to this forum (thankyou whoever runs it) I immediately phoned Microsoft who informed me of the scam - they advised me to go to the police - fortunately I contacted my bank and they are stopping any payment and changing my card. One has to be so careful - thank you Lord for not allowing me to be robbed!!. They have just phoned me back now and I told them not to contact me again.

I think they just say that. When I received a call they said something about detecting problems on my Windows laptop that I was currently using on the internet.

Any number of ways to get someone's phone number, including just going through the phone book.

I got the exact same call and played along with the Indian guy. They want you to visit fix123.org (probably their website) and download a customized version of AAMMY Admin (the green link) to "fix your problem". On that stage, I told him that his information is incorrect and that there are no such thing as electromagnetic junk files. He wanted to convince you that Warnings and Errors in the Windows Event Viewer are those files. Idiots.
