hello men

well, getting these strange disconnects when im idle, gosh its even when im active, coz its just done it now. 3 bars randburg (mnet). no error messages. called 3g helpline, they say i must go to vodaworld coz ive got old software??? and i must get new software??? my laptop is too new they say. any ideas guys? and when my machine goes into standby mode it crashes the dashboard. and then i must force quit.

ideas?

DONT USE THE DASH!!!!
and disable the pin its the only way to get a stable reconnect after standby.
A new pc/Laptop and Os has nothing to do with it.
I run a 2 month old laptop with XP pro SP2.

(btw. I do not download updates automaticaly as some of these can cause problems.)

Let me explain why I asked about XP SP2:

You might know that the compression component of the dashboard hooks itself into the OS at the same level as the virus programs and firewalls so as to intercept the compressed data stream. This has caused various problems for us, to the point that I've asked for a client without the compression agent built in.

My own XP Pro notebook always has the latest patches and earlier today downloaded and installed this new patch:

--------------------------------------
Update for Windows XP (KB887742)
Size: 325 KB - 447 KB
This update addresses an issue that could cause your system to stop responding if certain firewall or antivirus programs are installed. You can help resolve this issue by installing this HTTP.sys update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
More information for this update can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887742
--------------------------------------

The above patch only applies to XP SP2. Prior to SP2 the problem does not seem to appear. Thus my question to KVI on his OS/patch level.

I wonder how many of the dashboard related system crashes we've seen up to now was due to this?

Also, since I loaded this patch the disconnects have not reappeared. Maybe coincidence, but worth checking out on systems where we seem to have lots of dashboard problems.

rabbiddog, it makes sense in your setup as well as, by not using the dashboard, you would have avoided the problem described above.

Just a thought. Comments?

I have not had a single problem after I stopped using the dash. No crashes or hangs (appart from when I over heat my card but my fan tends to keep it cool enough) :)

Customers of mine as wellas myself, have had bad experiances with M$ upgrades, and apps hanging and system crashes. That is why I do not do automatic updates. M$ tends to release patches that still contain bugs (they will release a patch and then patch the patch later)

I have a seperate firewall, anti virus and spybot to protect me (and if I find that that is not enough I will load Lynux on VPC and use that to connect)

voda... going to risk giving that update a try. yes running sp2, also dont download patches coz many conflict with my software. (editing television for mnet) will let you know. once again appreciate you being here. its coz of you im on 3g

hey rabbid... teach me how to run without dash. if i try launch it thru the network connection that is already created it gives my some error, think it was something like error 678 or something.

have installed that patch, lets see

The sim has a pin number which needs to be entered first i.e. intert data card, open dash, enter pin, close dash, in network connections connect.
This I found a pain.
So I took the sim out stuck it in my phone and disabled the pin. Now I just plug in the data card, wait for the blue light to flash, and connect.

You can do it in the dash - just click on 'request pin' under Tools to remove the tick.

Obviously the dash is causing you a lot of problems. It worked on an old laptop with Win98 (according to the package limited support may need patches) just needed to upgrade IE to install. I have had no problems with the dash seems to work fine although you are limited to either being connected or sending/receiving SMS.

if i dont run the dash, will the data counter still work? wouldnt think so. i suppose i could just check on the net how much ive used.

hey voda3g, since installing that patch you recommended ive had no disconnects for about 5 hours now.. could it be?

Not much help but only my recently reinstalled Windows XP Pro with SP2 I have had a constant connection for almost 7 days now. USed to have the disconnect problem before the reinstall. Not saying that the solution but may be of some help.

kvi, yes the counters will not work.

There are 3rd party data counters (like Netstat) that should work. Maybe try one of those. It'll have to be one that log it's data.

Sounds good about the patch. Hopefully it's working. (Probably the first time I'm glad M$ brought out a patch!)

Diago, do you know if you've got the patch (KB887742) loaded? Should be listed under "Installed Apps".

hi voda. since that patch no disconnects....

Im having fun today.
