Strange line on desktop

I tried to help someone the other day with this but I didn't have much time with her laptop. Although I thought it was rather strange what I saw. She reminded me about it over the phone again today so I thought let me google but no joy.

There is a white vertical line randomly towards the right of her desktop, not all the way from top to bottom but most of the way. First I thought wallpaper. Changed the wallpaper from standard windows blue to a stretched pic and the line is still there.

Then I thought ok maybe something weird is up with the LCD on the laptop. Nope, if I drag and move icons and windows over the line they definately overlap it and you can't see it so it is on the desktop only.

So then I tried changing the resolution, the line moves further to the right the lower the resolution until 800x600 it simply cannot be seen, probably too far to the right.

So I thought ok...this isn't gfx drivers because it only appears on desktop wallpaper right? It isn't the wallpaper either and it also isn't the LCD. By then she had to leave so I couldn't scan for malware.

Is it just annoying malware or did I miss something? :) it's a small silly problem but there nonetheless. When next I see her laptop will try updating gfx drivers as well anyway.
