Strange Power Problem

Okay no bulging anything. Connectors removed and replaced and checked... Still nothing...

Pooky if it's not the PSU then I can only think of the Motherboard. Usually these symptoms are PSU related though.

What happens if try and fire the PC up with minimal stuff connected (CPU, 1x ram stick, main HDD) and disconnect the GPU, dvd roms, extra hard drives, ram etc?

Also double check the capacitors again.

So the times that the computer did actually switch on, it ran perfectly fine? even if switched off and then on? So only after removing it from the power completely does it give you these problems?

Yes ran perfectly. As long as it stayed connected to power I could switch it off and leave it off for a week and then come back and it would switch on perfectly.
As soon as I unplug the power cable for a couple hours (last time overnight) it would not switch on; but used to after about 5-20mins. Now nothing.

It could be that the other PSU you are testing with is also not 100%.

Also check A/C power loss restart option in bios just for schits and giggles.

I still reckon this is a PSU issue.

Tried unplugging all but the essentials. The other PSU is from my brothers computer which works perfectly.

How do I check that option if I can't power on the PC?

This is funny, i have the exact same thing. The MB lights go on ,so it gets power but it doesnt switch on. After awhile it will mysteriously start up. I however think my psu are not providing enough power (so it is most likely dying, but still giving some power).

When i inserted a gpu that needed more power my pc never came on again, when i switched back to a smaller gpu card, it fied up after a few minutes .

Either way, in my case i bought a new mobo, just waiting for it, but this is what my current one is doing too.

Mine used to do the same thing... it would also randomly startup in the middle of the night. Sleep is diabled on my PC so it wasn't that. Gone away now but I never did find the problem.

I don't get any MOBO lights at all.

But how big is your brother's psu? maybe it's big enough for he's computer but not yours?

If he's psu is smaller than yours I would try taking out all the extras (gpu, extra ram, extra hdd etc)

I've had many a PC do that and it's always the PSU. I did one just last Friday with the same symptoms. I've had two of my onw PCs do it in the past.

Okay I think I may have figured out what was causing it however I'm not sure how.... It is fixed now though for the moment.

There was a weird power setup going from the psu and powering a fan in the chassis but there were weird connectors and adaptors connected which were originally for little knobs controlling the fan speed. I have disconnected these random power things and it works now...

Just in case it is not a cause...
I think ponder is right. Next time it happens, check voltage on 5V_SB wire (violet). Sometimes there is a correct voltage, but noisy, blocking main choper from starting. You can check it by disconnecting power connectors from motherboard (and GPU card), but keep other devices powered to generate load. Then bridge PS_On wire to ground (green wire to one of black wire), forcing power supply to start. Your hard drive, optical devices should give startup noise, also power pack fan should rotate. If doesn't happen, it is power suppply problem for sure.
