Streaming is threatening SA broadcasters: expert

Internet streaming is a serious competitive threat to broadcast television in South Africa, but the technology is hamstrung by cost challenges, says an analyst.

Great news! I watched yesterday's Grand Prix with BBC One "legally"! Much better coverage than Super S...!
On Super S.., they have a few idiots talking about the race! On BBC, they had interviews with just about every driver as well as Nicky Lauda and a guy from Pirelli!

I suspect that ICASA is probably the problem.
How easy is it for broadcasters to get a streaming license? Is it included in their "normal" broadcasters license?

I can't think of any industry that has not gone through some form of upheaval when someone has come up with a new/better/cheaper way to do the same thing. That is disruption, and it is the way of the world. You can cry and wish for the "good old day", or do something to improve your own product and remain competitive, or at least find some differentiation that still keeps you relevant.

There is no licence required to stream a service... The internet has becoming the great equalizer of monopolies and hurts them badly, doesn't matter if it's subscription TV, print, radio or any other service that operates on so-called exclusive rights.

The music industry was the first victim to erode monopolistic CD distribution.

but that's just my 2c worth.

Long live streaming, unpacked my new TV this weekend - plugged it in the wall and that was it, no other connections bar entering the WiFi password.

But Fraser warned that while these services could potentially upend the local business model for broadcast TV, the cost of data would keep it exclusive.

The cost of data is dropping rapidly. You can get uncapped internet for around the same price as DSTV Premium, which allows you to do more than just watch TV. In fact, if you are an FNB customer, you can even get your bandwidth free (I do).

Btw how is FNB uncapped for streaming? Any problems on 4mbs?
