Hi, i am not sure this is the right section to post this but anyways...

My Friends got a DSTV Multichoice in his flat which is in a different building than mine...BUT we are connected thru WIFI Networking which is perfectly working. Now is there a method to STREAM the DSTV from his flat to mine...

i am using a USB TV Tuner on a computer at source to do the same...

i tried using VLCPlayer for the same with a little success on account of the quality...but the main problem is i am not able to change the channels...

Any Ideas Please....

VLC or windows media encoder is your best bet for streaming video. Streaming over wireless networks can sometimes be difficult, so always try to test your server first using standard wired LAN.

Nice thing about VLC is you can remotely control your tv card using VLC's built-in HTTP or telnel server. I did this to remotely change the channel (the tv card had a normal antenna as input).

To change the channel on the stand-alone DSTV decoder is unfortunately a bit more complicated (I assume you send the decoded signal to the tv card via AV or s-video cables). You'd need a IR transmitter connected to the pc, which can emulate the decoder's remote control and send virtual "button presses" to the decoder. LIRC (or WinLIRC on windows) should be able to do this for you, you'd only need to buy or build the IR transmitter hardware. Although, it might just be easier to phone your friend to change the channel :) You always be watching what he is watching anyway...

If its PVR or Twin Feed then they can have two separate channels.

out of curiosity, how do you stream DSTV using VLC?

The latest version of VLC makes streaming extremely easy over HTTP using WMV / WMA. I watch DSTV on my laptop in my bedroom and I have another pc serving the video stream close to the decoder using VLC. A good wifi signal and ap helps alot with this!

Both the streaming machine and laptop use WIFI so there is no need for extra cables this works nicely.

To control the DSTV from another place in your house, go to Hifi Corp or Builderswarehouse they sell a gadget that convets your DSTV remote signals to a radio signal that can be retrasmitted using a gadget close to the decoder. The only thing that is a little bit annoying is a 2.5 second delay everytime you change the channel - as it has to be converted and streamed first :P

I know this is an old post, but I thought it's relevant. :o

Would love to know if this is still working would like to stream dst to my bedoom without having to run a bunch of ccables

PVR to HDMI splitter, one output to TV and other to capture card on PC. Stream from PC using VLC.
