What is more embarrassing is when the average man on the street has to phone up his creditors and tell them he cannot pay his bills.

They are going to end up settling for 8% or perhaps 8.25% at a stretch, but it will cost the country a packet to reach that conclusion.

Any bets on what % the parties will settle for.

I say they should compromise and meet each other halfway: 12+6/2 = 9%

I blame the fat cats who gave themselves a 21% raise and who try to force a 6% raise on the workers... it is not fair.
Yes, this gets my goat. If you think 6% is enough then take that increase yourself. Don't get high an mightly down the line when you are talking about people who battle to make ends meet.

Personally i think give the people the 12% increase...

Librarian is right, the fatcats are living it large! (driving Top class Mercs and BMW's, pulling 50K-80K a month) While the people who do the hard work has to sweep up the crumbs literally.

i do think that people in Medical care, Police and Security are tugging at the short end of the stick, but in a hospital or Police station, the actual work gets done by who??? Answer : the Nurses or the Officers themself. The people "supervising" are getting huge pays to do nothing.

54% increase for mbeki, think 12% is justified...but, are performance reviews and giving increases accordingly beyond the supervisors working in state departments?

African politics at it's best.
The Big man get the cash and the worker bees get screwed.

Strikes like this should be treated as treason!! Not only the strike embarrasses the country but the footage of people toyi-toying on international "news" channels make our country look like a banana republic.

The bloody union fat cats still take their salaries while the wekkers are on strike.

What do you suggest? Mass firing squads (or hangings) at dawn? Only treason around here is fatcat politicians who pay themselves a fortune, and do nothing. The politicians should all get massive pay decreases and use that money to pay nurses and policeman.

"the strike embarrasses the country"

Get over yourself. True embarrassment is attitudes; empirically displayed here.

(though for people relying on these services it is a disaster)

Double their salaries and pay the politicians nothing!

It was also nice to see Whites and Indians joining the strike. It just shows that when the masses are tired, just don't **** with them. Gov had it coming. I support everyone on strike, i think it's about time the fat cats got a wake up call. I wonder what Moleketi's doing over the weekend. She must be having some sleepless night.

I wonder what Blair is telling his colleagues cos he saw it all. It must be very embarrassing for the Gov.

About time there was a decent strike!
That 21% raise that the top brass got should be lowered to 6% and the rest given to the workers.

All those MP's and top hunchos are a bunch of lying, conieving hypocrites.

Strikes like this .........make our country look like a banana republic.

Could it be argued that SA has now become a banana republic?
;)

Seriously though, look to see much more of this type of action in the future. Inflation and interest rates are about to soar. Food is going to become much more expensive and a whole host of things are going to become more dear. The Rand has fallen dramatically against the Canadian Dollar, approaching $1.00 = R7.00.

I was SHOCKED to see how little public service people are now being paid. For example a SA nurse could move to Canada at the drop of a hat and get a job, after qualifying in a very short space of time, paying over R530,000 per year: http://www.crha-health.ab.ca/supp/hr/employ/079061.htm

In SA they can barely make ends meet.

Very scary stuff indeed.

Interesting, that's news to me. It's around R7/US$, and has been for quite some time now. The rand losing value to the Canadian Dollar doesn't indicate that it's a weakening currency, but possibly that the Canadian Dollar is strengthening against the US$. Our currency rides off the back of the US$, GB Pound and the Euro.

Also, currency exchange rates aren't necessarily related to the strength of the economy of any particular country. If that were the case, countries like Japan and Italy would be in deep ****.

1.00 CAD = 6.68144 ZAR

$CAN has exploded against the $US in the last while. Our interest rates may be going up but US interest rates may be going down. Add to that the fact that Canada may soon become the worlds largest oil and gas supplier, then we have a "petro-dollar" scenario. House prices where I live are sky rocketing and yet in the USA they are falling.

$CAN will soon be at par with $US. http://www.thestar.com/Business/article/220707

A quick google for "Canada strike" reveals that Canadians enjoy a good strike themselves. Could it be argued that Canada has become a banana republic?

For "canada public service strike" : http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2004/04/20/nfldstrike040420.html

Starting salary of R530 000 per year? Really? In a public hospital?

Public servants are underpaid just about anywhere you care to go. I'm not saying they don't deserve better, I just don't think the salaries of public servants are a very good indicator of how a countries doing economically.
