Has your income been affected by the recent strike? I mean personally. Not talking about SA economy, possible downgrade to junk status or anything like that, just you or people you know.

A family member supporting his wife and two teenage children hasn't been able to source steel or open their small manufacturing company. He won't be able to pay his bond, school fees or any other debt if the strike continues. Insurance don't cover strikes.

How do creditors view the lack of payment? Do they add interest and understand or report to credit bureaux?

I'm wondering how long this strike will continue.

Our company relies heavily on a locally manufactured steel item but we could import like we used to. With the rand as weak as it is we'd pay more and have to pass that extra cost on to the retailer and from him it'd go to the consumer.

Fortunately we collected a consignment on monday but i'm wondering if i should start making import noises at wek because these things sell out pretty quickly and it would be economic suicide to be left without stock in a few months.

Nothing to do with the family member mentioned in OP.

Yeah, sure I'm affected. Have not written a single invoice so far this month. Can't get steel, can't make deliveries. What a mess!

Platinum strike cost my company a **** ton. We retrenched 30 staff from a workforce of 180 to 150. Exco has told us there will be no 'normal' increases this year, only people who have contributed significantly will get increases.

I'm jobless thanx to the platinum strike. No contract renewal from the boss, last in first out the other branches is pulling tight so I was chopped.

The SO's company is retrenching 10%, they are a huge multi national, and that was only the platinum sector. This one is going to end up costing another 5-10% their jobs. And then it is strike season and a bunch of the workers will strike for higher wages.

The effect of this strike will only be felt in a few weeks.

banks doesn't differentiate between debt due to economic hardships / strikes and normal non payment. They will have what you owe them on the terms you signed for.

Nope, still fine up here on the diamond mines, however, know of a good source within the union, the labour commisioner is on his way down here as the masses wish to strike, even though they get paid a mint, ne stalwart telling me that Marikana showed them the way, huh? Whosays Za does not export anything worthwhile?

Our companies new branch construction has been impacted and some idiots stoned one of our trucks the other day. We aren't even in the metal industry.

Sorry to hear you guys are bearing the brunt of the industrial action.

Family member mentioned in OP asked a supplier if they could get steel after hours. Supplier refused saying it was too dangerous  so? is everybody being watched or what?

I heard the general situation is so bad that certain retailers can't even forward plan their purchases and instead of ordering, say, x amount per week for the next few months will only order supplies when stock gets low. Spending habits have become unpredictable.

One of our company representatives travelled through a small place near carletonville and says it's virtually a ghost town after the 5 month strike. Miners without pay weren't buying so shops just closed down. Imagine the repurcussions for thousands of people who don't even have anything to do with mining.

Hopefully the shopowners are able to get back on their feet or the regular beggars are going to have to move over to make room for a few hundred more.

A slightly off topic note to all; make sure that your personal and commercial insurance policies have Sasria insurance added to it. If not, make sure you get it ASAP. Not worth leaving it off the policy even if you are not directly affected. You never know when these trolls and miscreants might come your way and cause damage.

I thought SASRIA was mandatory? Payouts take 3-6months from experience.

Sister in law and a friend affected. Neither can work at offices, one has threats of violence. One is still being paid, the other is on 'leave'. The one working in the north of Joburg has it easier than the one working to the east.

Hasn't affected me yet but the factory is empty... and we normally have 1400 people working here. So it's just a matter of time.

The effect on the economy does/will personally effect me and everybody else. Indirectly maybe, but it will be felt.

This unfortunately the truth. We might not be directly affected now, but in months/years to come, the knock on effect will be evident. It is tough making financial decisions now. So albeit not directly, indirectly my household is affected now.

On my current commission: I just heard reports this morning that striking members go from factory to factory and break into the premises to see if there are anyone working. They come armed with their traditional weapons. It is pathetic the state into which the lack of balls of government has dumped a beautiful country into. I try to keep a positive mind, but it is getting harder to do so.

Thats the bigger problem..... the financial uncertainty... :(

As for these muppets breaking into factories to see if anyone is working... they deserve to get put in their place.. I wonder if any factories have hired armed guards yet to try and protect their workers?

The factories I have knowledge of have seized all work to protect the labour not affiliated with the unions.

Yup, I know of a good many places in Prospecton in Durban that have halted all work due to this. The knock on effect is staggering because of it. Toyota will start running low on some very basic parts soon, as will Defy etc etc...
