Struggle songs have a place - U2

He said: "I was a kid and I'd sing songs I remember my uncles singing ... rebel songs about the early days of the Irish Republican Army."

He sang one of them, the lyrics telling of carrying guns and getting them ready for action. "We sang this and it's fair to say it's folk music .. as this was the struggle of some people that sang it over some time. But would you want to sing that in a certain community? It's pretty dumb.

"Yet it's about where and when you sing those songs. There's a rule for that kind of music."

I'd like to know exactly when and where struggle songs are appropriate. Bono is not rejecting them entirely.
 
A mere vague 'struggle song', as U2 uses as an example, is one thing, lyrics that constitute very literally and directly a specific instruction from leaders to commit genocide within the context of an ongoing genocide against those people, are quite another.

Bono is a piece of sh-t retard loser who thinks he's God - boycott his drivel and ignore him.

This particular struggle song (shoot the boer) was never OK, and never had an acceptable place. It was never right to murder innocents. War should always be restricted to the military and to combatants. Those who kill innocents and non-combatatans are called cowards and are rightly called "terrorists" and murderers. The ANC could never distinguish historically who their actual enemy was, so they just went about blowing up people at malls and slaughtering them on farms. Some people seem to think that it is OK to forgive them for this, and that they were doing it in the name of "freedom", but I don't see how freedom can flow from murder. And the current state of our country (lawlessness, rampant crime, corruption, murder, hijackings and entitlement) is a testimony to the ANC's past blood thirstiness and their inner failings as a political party. Their "struggle" ideology continues to work itself out daily in the pointless death and murder of thousands of ordinary South Africans both black and white, poor and rich. This land will never be a rainbow nation or a place of peace until the ANC recognises this and abandon's their language of death and destruction.

I wonder if Paul Hewson did his homework before even commenting on THIS "struggle song"?

Granted, he makes a disclaimer right at the end but you cannot compare the "Shoot The Boer" so-called song to what he thinks is a struggle song (see Gary's post above).

Well during the struggle the word boer represented the oppressive Verwoed/PW government. It's been taken too literally these days.

I read the article (not on MyBB) at around 4am this morning... I can understand what he's getting at, but do not think it is appropriate for him to even discuss the "Kill the Boer" song, especially when it is currently being argued in our courts.

Guaranteed it was in response to a question by some journalist who was hoping for exactly the same sort of reaction that has taken place on this thread.

I would like to point out this song is about patriotism and defending ones country, not murder, unlike shoot the boar, above song doesn't even (directly) talk about killing, shows the difference between then Army and a bunch of fusking terrorists
