Good day.

I am looking fro a reliable student car in the R80,000-R100,000 range. I like the Ford Fiesta ST allot, i think it is perfect. But do any of you know if this car give problems, or is it as reliable as any other VW Polo? If the Ford is not reliable then ill prob go for the Polo1.6L.

I am more concerned about reliability than fuel consumption.

It's reliable enough. But here lies the problem.
Who is likely to buy a Fiesta ST? 18-30 year old guy, single.
How is he likely to drive the car? Enthusiastically :)

So if you get a second hand Fiesta ST there's a high probability it's been red lined and driven harshly. Secondhand you're much safer to get a conservative car like a VW Polo.

I agree with Brenden_E on a second-hand ST - it's a performance car. You don't buy those second hand if you don't know how it was driven.

Also, you will be spending more moolah on maintenance with the ST than the Polo.

This!

And at R80,000-100,000 you are bound to find an ST that has been with quite a few "enthusiastic" drivers, I'd avoid any car like that at that price as it will have a crap load of hard driven mileage and will require many things to be replaced out of a maintenance plan.

Get a nice Polo Vivo, Toyota Etios, Hyundai i10, Renault Clio etc... You can get most of those new or very close to new for about R140,000, I'd say it would be worth spending a bit more and going for the new Clio, very well priced and it is stunning.

So what if it was driven enthusiastically. If this car is not smoking and has a good service history then buy it. Performance cars are built to handle hard driving.

Your insurance will be more than car payments.

Reliability = Depends on how the car was taken care of/maintained and not on what make/model it is. People nowadays seem to automatically think that a used Toytota/Honda is more "reliable" than a used Renault/Ford etc.

Fiesta ST's are pretty damn reliable. The Duratec H4 engine is bullet proof. I did 260K kms on mine, and all I ever replaced was 1 clutch, a few globes and the battery. They can take a hammering quite well.

If I had 100k budget I would buy one of the following with less than 50k KM's on it.

1) 2013 Hyundai i10/i20
2) 2013 Ford Figo
3) 2013 Nissan Micra
4) 2013 Kia Picanto

Not a fan of the Brio and the Aygo, not even going to talk about the Etios.

Those are all pretty boring though aside from maybe the i20 and the Figo.

So it's your call OP.

Ford is actually more reliable than VW. Within your price range, you can get a 2006 Ford Fiest ST 165 000 km mileage for R 100 000 same for VW Polo. Because it is so old and high mileage, problems will soon pop up sooner or later even if Ford has better reliability than VW it will still have problems but just much less problems than VW. The VW Polo has better fuel consumption than Ford Fiesta ST.

Get the VW Polo because it's everyone's favourite. If you want the top Reliability get Honda or Toyota instead. Or a Mazda.
Why don't you get yourself a newer Polo Vivo instead or Ford Figo with less mileage. You can't get much decent within that Price range and expect no problems with high mileage.

Or raise more money and get a newer less milage WV Golf.

Sorry but there are lots of good cars for up to R100k :|
