( I'm tired of the Village idiot taking up the space)

Durban - Management at Durban University of Technology will meet students on Wednesday in a bid to end protests on campus.

“There is going to be a meeting today at Steve Biko Campus today with management,” said Mzamo Khanyile, deputy secretary of the student representative council.

Some classes were disrupted on Monday and Tuesday at DUT's Durban campuses but the university has not suspended classes.

The students are demanding the institution provide branded condoms and sanitary towels to each student room but the university says this will be costly and unsustainable.

Students were also demanding financial aid for Bachelor of Technology students.

According to DUT vice chancellor, Professor Ahmed Bawa, government does not provide funding for B.Tech studies except in the cases of education and nursing.

There was also a petition from the students calling for the dissolution of the SRC.

Why stop at condoms and pads? We demand toilet rolls, razor blades and shampoo too...

Well don't see anything wrong. The people demand it, you must supply it!

They are the ones that pay these teachers and built these schools, they have a right to demand whatever they deem necessary. These universities are rich, they CAN afford to give condoms and sanitary pads and they damn well can afford to give scholarships.

So I say listen to the "village leader" have a conference somewhere and discuss. We at very least need to provide condoms asap, that alone can save people from STD's and unwanted pregnancies.

My university never provided towels, condoms or anything else that wasn't strictly within the curriculum...

The problem is not that they're not being provided with condoms and sanitary towels, because they are - the problem is that they're demanding name brands. You know, the pack of 3 Contempo/Durex that the rest of us have to pay R50 (or whatever it is) for?

I can personally garuntee you that most, if not all of those protestors are not paying for their tertiary education and have been only given quota spots. The real students are the ones sitting in the labs and lecture halls getting a good education while the coat-tail-riders are outside toi-toing for more free stuff.

They COULD be demanding that they pass or pay nothing - but I guess they're getting this already.

I think I'll go back to university and demand condoms, shampoo, Aquafresh, Pronutro - heck, my whole grocery list. And an iPad 2.

They gonna charge us tax everytime we flush toilet to pay for it just now

All for the free condoms. While they're at it, make the pill free too.

Where do these students get off always demanding things? Why don't they go work so they can buy their own stuff. This isn't a charity.

The pill is free too. At the clinic on campus.

Its good to see students ask for condoms. The cost of HIV/AIDS anti retrovirals are a lot more than a condom. Also, if this helps our population growth issues out, Im all for it˙
