Yeah, they do. At least one in the world. Why not?

It doesn't cause harm to other people. So why mess with them other than just to be vindictive?

People's cultural rights are protected the world over. The Afrikaaners are a minority and deserve this as much as Native Americans in the US, or Aborigines in Australia or San people in South Africa.

It should be said that Stellenbosch is also a university for coloured people. Why mess with Afrikaaners and Coloured people? Again, it seems to be vindictive.

yeah. Anglo is a multinational. It did actually reduce the presence and ability to speak Afrikaans by people who use it as a home language in their own country. It's a foreign, imperialistic intervention. It's Cecil John Rhodes, just that you approve because this time you seem happy to give it to Afrikaans speakers, perhaps.

Doesn't compute . More black/coloured people speak Afrikaans so why would it be a white only varsity? English varsities are not all white are are they? Should they be? You are not making sense.

What do you propose, every language but Afrikaans can have one? So why haven't thaye been built.

Afrikaans is the second or third most spoken language in this country by a big margin. It makes sense that there would be one?
 
I dont know stellies well but it was largely white and afrikaans when i visited my bro there 2008-2011. I can understand the discomfort of being the odd one out having gone to an all-english varsity. But to say classes or the admin dont cater to non-afrikaans is disingenous. They should try that at kovsies or potch and promptly see their tires slashed and clothes on the compost heap. Stellies is not going to change overnight and if you feel left out at the 'braai beraad' get a girlfriend of your preferred complexion to translate for you. It's not like we're from pluto or something. I spent a year eating by myself in the dining hall at i'm better for it.

It's not correct to compare English - a universal language much adopted by many diverse nationalities, with Afrikaans spoken chiefly by two ethnic-language groups much, much less diverse and limited by geography and history.

Compare to Italians or Irish in the US or Orthodox Jews in NYC, who do self identify and it's not a sin.

True

Living with Afrikaans people in Thabazimbi, Kathu, Roodepoort, I observe there are subtle differences in the way of thinking and doing things. In the same way Xhosa people in East London, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Transkei will differ. Language may be the same but culture will change within same ethnic group.

Why enrol in a university that will have some content in Afrikaans, and then complain? WTF. There are other English-only universities...

We even had foreign students in our classes at Stellenbosch, and all the textbooks are in English anyway, so they handled it fine.

No, but the people around there live in a province that is 70% Afrikaans, with neighbouring [-]countries[/-] provinces that has a high or higher ratio of Afrikaans speaking people.

But the majority of the people in the country speak other languages and the university is funded by government . Its unfair to cater for a minority. Furthermore afrikaans has no real relevance outside of South Africa.

I don't think it should matter if you are a minority... My understanding is that the whole education drive is to teach people in their home language?

No higher education needs to be taught in english. We compete in a global environment. Afrikaans should be made a 3rd language and french or spanish mandarin or arabic should be made a compulsory second lanuage.

Sure,

Here follows my case for an Afrikaans University in the Western Cape:
1 - Afrikaans is a bigger first language than English in South Africa.

2 - Population stats wise, the population group with the lowest ratio of tertiary education is predominantly Afrikaans (Census 2011).
They are mostly located in the Western Cape. Outside of Cape Town the language of trade is Afrikaans.

3 - There is about 10 universities that I can think of, there might be more. That means atleast one can cater for Afrikaans mother
tongue education. (I know there is more than 1 "Afrikaans" university, but my point is it should be where most of the speakers
are located.)

So you basically want to abolish all other languages and just go with the international ones?
