Students protest in Stellenbosch over language

Went through the same some lecturers were Afrikaans others English, textbooks all in English. Answered the question paper in whatever language I felt like that day. Read the questions in whatever language felt easier at the time. Look I understand not everyone can speak both languages well enough but don't you know that when choosing where to study? Or should all institutions cater equally well for all 11 languages?

Some of us studied honours courses in a language we don't understand, so you shouldn't treat people's disgruntlement over this issue lightly. Have you attended a lecture in isiZulu or Sesotho, and still expected to pass the course?

Which is why in my second post I suggest every uni should offer some courses in a different language. That way if you are stuck in bum**** Bloemfontein, you can at least get a degree in something in your own language.

Making everybody just revert to English is essentially cultural genocide. We aren't all just cogs in a system and an educational institution is about more than teaching you how to play with tesla coils and calculate bacterial growth rates.

Not speaking the language well enough is not the same as not speaking the language at all. Some of us didn't speak the language at all. That shouldn't be happening. I didn't chose where to study, I went to the only University that was closer to me.

We should not pretend as if language was not used in this country to oppress others.

I love dual medium schools and Universities, and to me that's the way to go in our country. I don't agree with people who don't want others to be taught in Afrikaans, instead I say that people should have a choice of the language they want to be taught in.

Okay... would you go to your nearest shop knowing that they don't stock the item that you want to buy and then protest that they don't stock it once you get there. Or would you go to another shop that you know full well does in fact stock the item?

Maybe I should protest because the closest university to me doesn't offer Japanese and I like Nintendo and Japanese JRPGs so they're oppressing me.

Also they don't offer courses in Cross Cultural Gaming... fokkers

If all unis and courses are English only all the students will be on the same playing field. Remember english is a second language to most blacks also.
 
Following some people s logic in this thread , university of limpopo must lecture in sepedi, UKZN zulu, UOFS sotho,
UNW in tswana , etc. How is that gonna work exactly?

They should if those people have a yearning demand for it, that they don't is their issue... ;)
 
Maybe its time to start a good private university, that won't take for any government funding and government should allow it to be registered.

He's just pushing it because his holy book is written in that language, in SA it does not even feature, worldwide it has about 350mil native speakers which is a lot but not as much as manderin, english, spanish etc.

In the WC Afrikaans is the most predominant language but I still reckon all institutions should lecture in engrish if it is state funded. Now start a private afrikaans varsity with no state funding and it will do just fine, problem is it will be labled wacist.

Solidarity started a college "for white Afrikaners" and it's doing well and I'm happy for them.
