Please help me with some dipstick research - I'm wanting to roll out a mobisite to varsity students and want to know the market share so I can build to the most popular platforms.
This isn't necessarily only for full-time students.
I'm not a student, so please help me out.

My guess:
Blackberry: 80%
Nokia: 10%
Android: 5%
iPhone: < 2%

Would you say this is accurate, or is Blackberry even more dominant?

no ways blackberry on top, yes a lot of MY friends have blackberrys (I am a 7th year student and survive on bursaries so hence more money than average undergrad) but the majority of students i see walking around campus still have dumbphones like older nokias and sonyericssons. Also depends on your demographic and the wealth of the students. I suppose the best way would be to approach the university and ask permission to do an send an email linking to an online poll site or do it with pen and paper on campus.

Put me down for android. Don't think there's that many students on myBB surprisingly.

I'm a UNISA student and most people that study with me have BB's.

My gf is a student, when she went to upgrade her phone, Vodashop also told her to get a BB as its the most popular phone among students.

Sent from my HTC Desire using MyBroadband Android App

I second this. Its quite a mix depending on how much money the student has to throw around.
It also depends on the needs of the person, not all students need smartphones.

for real?
wow, didn't know bb wasn't as widespread as that.
the note about the demographics between campuses/courses. that makes a lot of sense.
i don't really need to do hectic in-depth research, i just wanted to get a feel for where students are at...
this is very helpful, thanks.

I'm a student and use a Symbian Nokia phone.

Here is my guess based on experience with my mates

Blackberry: 40%
Nokia: 30%
Android: < 2%
iPhone: < 2%
Other normal cellphones: 25

BB is gaining market share fast within student communities. Most students do not pay for their own cellphones, it's their parents money, so getting a BB is not hard. Also, in my experience, more female students than male students have BB's. iPhones and Android based smartphones are too expensive for students in general.

Blackberry and iPhone (yes I carry both everyday)

Android left at home

China, all the chicks have BB Curves. A real man uses the Bold. Haha

Im a Varsity College student, doing BBA Marketing Management 2nd year, have a Xperia X10 biggie lol, so put me down for Android, my 5800 and Galaxy Tab10.1v stay at home :p, wouldn't even bother with BB when there's WhatsApp, but yes i would say BB is the most popular, im at the Sandton campus and majority of students there have BBs, ive seen quite a few iPhones, one or two Androids, and quite a bit of E and Nseries Nokias mainly E63, E71 and N97.
